Amongst the worst things to ever come out if individualism, indifference has caused the most suffering among people who endure the negative effects of individualism. In American politics, it is a common belief that individuals should determine their own worth which can be challenging as many are born at a disadvantage compared to others. Many are born in particular social classes, races, and different communities that is shown to be continuously oppressed by history. The majority of wealth is owned by a small group of people, minorities endure racism, and poor regions do not receive enough aid which can make it more difficult for them to make a successful living for themselves. If individualism was not practiced to the extent in the way it is currently, then some of these issues would not be as severe. The government can make policies to fix these issues which would benefit a larger group of people than individualism as it gives civil liberties and protections to those who are classified in these communities which would give a voice to those who are not heard. This would create more opportunities for people as they "can acquire it from others, from the social whole" (DeVoto). The only way to make progress is to help out everyone to succeed in life and not to repeat horrific events in history "that teaches us to hope" (Lee). It is universally agreed upon that history was not kind to humanity and specifically to certain groups such as African Americans. For decades ,segregation was enforced in America, which caused people of color to be at a disadvantage compared to white people as they had a less effective educated system, higher rates of poverty, and less economic opportunities. The government allowed this as they considered them equal, but separated, and capable of which was not necessarily true as they also had certain rights not being protected as many African Americans were denied the right to vote even if they were eligible which continued in the trend of the government suiting white Americans. It was not until the Civil Rights Movement where many of the issues were resolved or made better. The government broke society's beliefs of individualism, and helped an underprivileged community to have a better chance of succeeding in life. Miscommunication amongst individuals can provoke consequential outcomes that are in no way beneficial to society.
Miscommunication can lead to the spread of false information. The 2016 Presidential Election is seen as among the most controversial elections in American history. The two main candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, used rhetoric that may have not provided the most accurate information to the voters as it is now clearly visible in the aftermath of the election under President Trump's administration. Trump can be seen as a advocate for individualism through his political visions. Trump, and most Republicans, support philosophies that are based off individualism such as the right to bear arms, lower taxes, and regulations of universal healthcare. Some of these are protected by the Constitution; however, they have brought injustice in America. Mass shootings are a common occurrences, the wealthy still control the majority of the nation's wealth, The benefits of individualism may be debatable, but the way people are treated are too important to not be taken into consideration. Humanity has existed for centuries; yet, there is so much suffering left in the world that will most likely not be fixed anytime soon. Individualism was conceived to fix the world's problems; yet, society has not united the people of the world, but has kept communities separated from each other, and continued on the suffering of individuals. The individuals that individualism tried to give liberty to, were instead granted despair and
suffering.
