1. What learning skills can be developed using ICT skills?

The learning skills that can be developed using ICT skills are: • Communication skills • Problem solving skills • Critical and creative thinking skills • Investigation skills • Evaluation and analysis skills

2. Discuss 5 factors the teaching assistant should consider when setting up ICT.

5 factors that should be taken into consideration when setting up ICT are: • Heat and light- Most ICT equipment gives off heat and this heat can build up over the day. It can make users uncomfortable and can also have a negative impact upon the equipment. The ideal temperature of the ICT suite is between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius and should have humidity between 40 and 60%. The room should be well ventilated and air conditioning used where appropriate. Lighting levels should be set lower than in a standard classroom to ensure there is appropriate contrast between screen and background environment. Semi translucent vertical blinds are best for reducing glare as they stop the glare from the sun but still let light in and they reduce low angle sunshine, especially in rooms facing west or east. They can also make access to windows easier than horizontal blinds. • Comfort- Users should be able to sit in a comfortable position and have easy access to all equipment. Users should take regular 10 minute breaks away from the computer in order to stretch their limbs. The user must be able to adjust their position whilst sitting in relation to the equipment being used. • Personal safety- equipment such as a photocopier that has fast moving parts can trap hair clothing and jewellery, they should be used in well ventilated areas and pupils must not handle toners and inks or try to repair faults. • Noise- Most ICT equipment emits noise when switched on even if it is not in use and most software has noise as part

Every individual has the right to communication as the Human Rights Act (1998) lists the freedom of expression as well as other rights relating to communication. As a staff, I have a moral obligation as well as adhering to the standards, codes of practice, guidelines, morals and law that govern my practice to ensure that communication needs are met. For example, If an individual’s communication needs are not met then all aspects of their daily life can be affected such as not being able to communicate properly and express their feelings and needs. This could be more severe in the case of abuse whereby the individual can’t communicate effectively to alert others if they are being abused and can be vulnerable to abuse or when the service user is unable to express that they are in pain .The result could also put others in dangers for example if a person’s communication needs were not met and they discovered a fire they would not be able to report it quickly which would put others in danger. It would also impact other rights such as those covered by the GSCC’s codes of practice which include; diversity, equality, control, dignity, effective communication, risks, safety and security. These would be infringed because the individual would not be able to effectively communication their opinions or views in relation to these rights.…

People who play an important role in service users lives are families and significant others. These are more often than not the people who know the service user best and can be an invaluable source of information and support. Family members and significant others are a very good source of information which may help support workers to understand the service user’s needs, preferences, history choice and the things they like or dislike. Support workers might be best positioned in order to provide the help service users need to achieve the best possible outcomes if they develop and maintain a good relationship with the service users families and their significant others and they all work together in order to achieve the same outcome. The benefits of support workers, significant others and families working together are enormous and invaluable. The service user’s psychological and social well-being is improved by the help of support by family and carers. There is a greater willingness to share, tackle any misunderstanding and resolve any issues as quickly as possible. Families and significant others can be crucial to what service users experience or continue to experience and achieve. Support workers should work with the families and significant others of service users in order to help shape the care and support that they receive. Some of this could be where families and significant others continue to engage and remain involved in all parts in the delivery of the service users care and support. Some family members may choose to continue supporting the service user with their finances, shopping, appointments, taking service users out regularly or just giving general support whilst at the same time helping to ensure that the service user’s life is full and enjoyable with the support of staff and family members.…
