“Driving a boat is a skill and if you don’t maintain it, it is easily perishable,” said Ramirez.
“We do it in order for us to stay sharp on our tasks and skills. It also depends on experience, how long you have held a qualification and the amount of missions you have done; it is important to maintain proficiency as you never know when you will have to use your skills.” “Outside of those serving in the Coast Guard, few people have a solid idea of what the Coast Guard’s mission is,” said Ramirez. “Most people know us for our search and rescue missions; Deployable Specialized Forces is a small community that is so important to global security and we maintain a presence around the
world.” The Coast Guard DSF, formerly known as the Deployable Operations Group, is a reaction force that deploys in an immediate time frame when needed to handle natural disasters, environmental catastrophes, terrorism and other high threat events on the United States. “We are ready at a moment’s notice,” said Ramirez. “That is especially important for our overall mission at JTF GTMO. Working together across all branches to get the job done; when we are all doing the best at our jobs and maintaining our skills and proficiencies we can succeed through any mission that comes our way.”
