Q1. Use the Cyclic Innovation Model (Fig 1.9, pg 30) figure to illustrate the innovation process in this case and provide a brief description?
Answer –The Cyclic Innovation Model (CIM) is a model of innovation process which a company adopts to introduce new products which are backed by innovation and services offered by an old product. Innovation by definition is the successful implementation and launch of new products and services by an organization. As shown in the figure below, CIM model stands on 4 pillars - Scientific research, Technological development, Product creation and Market transition. Taking example from the case study of Apple Inc. the company launched its famous music player iPod which was actually based on the output of the CIM. It captured the need of the consumers of a music player with innovative features which should not be a simple MP3 player offered by other competitors but a smarter one. The iPod launched was backed by information from the various market segments (research) especially the youth. This led to creating the iPod (creation). The innovation was the technology used by Apple and the user interface provided by them. It was a big hit as it was marketed in proper segments and through proper channels. IPod soon became the social symbol and was of increasing demand. CIM helped Apple to become a lifestyle brand and the services offered made him a world leader.

Q2. With sales of iPod falling and Apple facing fierce competition from all quarters such as Sony, Dell, Samsung and other electronics firms as well as mobile phone makers who are incorporating MP3 players into their devices, can the iPod survive?
Answer – Music lovers got a huge surprise from Apple Inc., when it launched the Apple iPod in 2001. This was the first time when music met innovation. The iPod was a huge success as it gave superb quality music, pluggable
