In the novel “A Tale of Two Cities” The author Charles Dickens uses various themes such as death and resurrection, social conflicts and sacrifice. To convey different ideas to the reader. Dickens also uses many forms of figurative language to help convey the many themes. Foreshadowing, allusion and motifs is some of the many figurative languages that is used. The story takes place during the french revolution. “ The first book of the novel, ‘Recalled to Life’, traces the resurrection of Dr, Manette, who has been in prison for almost twenty years.(Sheryl 357). After the finding out that Dr. manette is still alive his daughter goes and searches for him. Dr, manette is locked in a Bastille, which is a prison. To Dickens the prison symbolizes the form of a grave. He also died in a psychological level since his family basically had forgotten about and didn't even know he had been in a prison for 20 years. Because of this his resurrection would be that he was alive all along and his family went to find him. Another example of death and resurrection would be with a Character named Charles Darnay. Darnay is being held in trail for given information to the british about France. Charles is resurrected during the trial after Carton had said that Darnay and himself look alike and that confuses the jury if it was really Darnay. Carton saves Darnay from his “grave” aka prison.a and was resurrected by Carton. The last and major example of death and resurrection is the Death of the character named Sydney Carton. “The theme of death and resurrection reaches its fullest expression in the character of Sydney Carton, a Christ figure who lays down his life for his friend(Sutherland)” He lets himself get executed in order to save the lives of others.
