Taming of the shrew Petruchio Analysis
1. Who is your character? Provide all of the information that you know about them from the entire play.
My character is Petruchio. Petruchio’s character has two sides. On the surface, he appears to be rough, noisy and someone who does not care about Katherina, as long as she is wealthy. However, this is not the main reason he marries Katherina (Petruchio is also wealthy, he has many servants). The main reason is to accept the challenge of capturing Katherina as well as taming her. After marrying Katherina, Petruchio uses his own unique cruel methods to tame her and calm her down; the use of his unique cruel method shows his intelligence and patience. However, he does not mean to hurt or to misuse her. Certainly, he is not gentle, for he once says, “For I am rough and woo not like a babe.” (2.1.136) Petruchio emphasizes he is not a baby, but a mature adult. He is sure that Katherina will surrender to him at last as he will not be very kind to her. Apart from that, Petruchio always argues with Katherina, and he seldom accommodates her; however, he is just what Katherina needs. Petruchio maintains a sense of humour throughout the play. For example, when he first sees Kate, he repeats her name for “a thousand times”. Petruchio says, “You lie, in faith, for you are called plain Kate, / And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the curst, / But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom, / Kate of Kate Hall, my super-dainty Kate/ For dainties are all Kates- and therefore, Kate of my consolation/” (2.1. 184-189) Petruchio uses his own method to attract Katherina’s attention toward him; he wants to tell her she is important to him. The use of repetition increases the humour in the atmosphere.

2. Explain how you interpreted your character. Provide specific examples from the play to back up your ideas.
Petruchio is not greedy, and he is a person full of confidence. Petruchio does not marry Katherina for her money; if money is the only reason to marry her, surely he would not

In the film ’10 things’ the language is quite informal and coarse. The people at her school refer to Kat as a ‘heinous bitch’, Even the school principal, someone who has authority, has no problem with passing that information on to Kat. This is a huge contrast between the ‘Katherina’ of the shakespearen text, whom others called a ‘shrew’ or a ‘wild beast’.…

It was not until the 20th century that the topic of poor treatment towards minorities and women began to make recurring appearances in legislation and US Supreme Court decisions. Minority ethnicities and religions, as well as races, began to obtain more rights and experience less discrimination due to progress in legislation. Before the 20th century, most ethnicities, races, and women were viewed as subordinates and accepted that position because they had no opportunity to move up the socioeconomic ladder and lacked the means to fight against the system that disenfranchised them. Unbeknownst to most, several of these explosive topics were addressed in literature over 300 years prior…

Throughout the play, the action shifts from a couple of different locations. After Petruchio marries Katerina, the fluid action of the play shifts evenly from different locations in Padua to Petruchio's house. In Padua, the action of the play is usually somewhat positive. However when the play moves to Petruchio's house, the action is somewhat negative. Fluid action shows the different points of view of the characters in different situations. Petruchio acts differently at his own home than he does in Padua, occasionally. Kat definitely acted differently while at Petruchio's home than she had in Padua.…
