Tartuffe Act 2 Essay

At the start of act II Orgon finds his daughter and they discuss how loyal she is to her father, after the discussion Orgon then proceeds to tell his daughter that she needs to say how she finds Tartuffe to be a very worthy man and that she would love to be his wife. As the reader I find this to be very problematic because we already know how deceitful Tartuffe is. Dorine the comical maid points out to Orgon that Tartuffe has no property and no social alliances, and that if his daughter is to marry Tartuffe against her will she is sure to be unfaithful. Mariane could have easily stood up for herself and told her father no but she has been under his control for so long, disobeying his orders is not a possibility for her. Dorine the maid is the most helpful in this situation to me because
Damis (Orgons son.) has a burning hatred for Tartuffe and is even more angry that there is plans for him to marry his sister. He has set froth on a path to expose Tartuffe for what he really is. The wedge between the family gets driven even farther when Damis tries to expose Tartuffe for coming onto a married woman, but Tartuffe and his silver religious tongue flips the situation back onto Damis and gets him thrown out of the house. Even though Tartuffe despises wealth he still accepted the transfer of property from Orgon, and by now somebody has to know something is wrong and Cleante is the one who sniffed it out. When Tartuffe is confronted by Cleante he all the sudden has to be somewhere and exits the scene. Finally, Orgon’s wife develops a plan to catch Tartuffe in the act and instructs Orgon to hide the table to witness some strange behavior. Orgon then confronts Tartuffe about his hypocrisy but it is too late as when Orgon tries to banish Tartuffe from the house, he is immediately reminded that he had signed the house over to Tartuffe and Orgon is the one who must
