Kitsap County is located on the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington State’s northwest region. Just east of Seattle, the county is surrounded on three sides by the Puget Sound, a large inlet of salt water that enters the region through the Straits of Juan De Fuca. There are multiple modes of transportation used to access the region including ferryboats, bridges and highways. Kitsap County is known for its beauty in scenery.
Population and Economics: The population in Kitsap County totals 245,500 people. Sixty-seven percent of the population belong to the unincorporated regions, where 33% in the incorporated areas. The city of largest inhabitant is Bremerton, Washington, which makes up 47% of the county’s residents. This is in large part due to the large US Navy presence in the county. Navy Base Kitsap is the largest Navy base in the northwest region and is third largest in the United States. (“Welcome to Naval Base”). Bainbridge Island makes up 28% of the county’s populations with 23,090 persons living on a twenty-mile square foot island located just across the water, a ferryboat ride away, from Seattle. The race is predominantly white, making up 79% of the population. Next being Hispanic or Latino at 6%, then Asian and multiracial ethic groups both equaling 5% of the residents. Three% are Black or African American and lastly American Indian and Alaskan Native making up 1% of the population. (“Kitsap County Core,” 2013). Males slightly outnumber females and the percent of foreign-born persons is 6.9%. Languages other than English spoken in the home are at 10.1%. (Kitsap County, Washington”, 2013).
