Shock Floods the Nation After Care Home
Abuse and Neglect

On the 26th of February 2014 The Old Deanery Care Home had an unannounced inspection from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This inspection was carried out after the BBCs panorama went undercover with one person posing as a care worker with a hidden camera on her person, as well as hidden cameras in certain resident’s rooms. What they discovered would shock and horrify the nation.
The hidden cameras revealed certain residents being roughly handled and taunted. Call bells were being left unanswered for unacceptable amounts of time, even being pulled out on one occasion. At one time also, a lady was even slapped.

Staff were also asked about the quality of care they believed was being given in the home. Most staff said they were happy with the care being given however they did state that they were usually short staffed and because of this residents had to wait an unacceptable length of time for their call bells to be answered. In addition, due to this long waiting time residents would often be found in saturated clothes and bedding. Due to the poor quality of care residents were emotionally distressed, sometimes even developing illnesses and sores due to being left in saturated clothes for too long.

The home stated that is was ‘’shocked and saddened by these allegations’’. Also Angela Retirement Homes Ltd, which runs the Old Deanery said that ‘’the incident involved a small number of staff and were not representative of the high standards of care it demanded’’ and that ‘’As soon as the management team was made aware of the allegations we made immediate action’’ they also revealed that soon after these allegations 8 staff were immediately suspended and would not return to work pending a full enquiry. In addition the care worker who was responsible for slapping another resident was also immediately dismissed. The undercover filmer said herself that she saw many good care workers

I watched this documentary this morning with my class on the goings on at Winterbourne View Residential Hospital for adults with Learning Disabilities. I watched as a member of staff made complaints and went to the top to report what was going on in the home and was not taking seriously and ignored and nothing done about his complaints not even an investigation and ended up having to go to the BBC Panorama team. I am ashamed at the fact that the staff member, a senior male nurse called Terry Bryan had to go to people not in the health care industry to talk about what was happening and becoming a whistle-blower in order to help the patients as much as he could.…
