Standard questions: Part I 1) Who is involved? (Characterization) 2) What happened in the passage? (Plot development) 3) When did the event(s) happen? (time/setting) 4) Where did the event(s) happen? (Place/setting) 5) How did the events or actions affect characters? (cause/affect, compare/contrast) 6) Why did characters act as they did? (Making inference, character motives)
Secondary questions: Part II
1) Vocabulary: Write two unknown words, definitions, and book sentences from passage. 2) Comparison: Explain how author compared things. 3) Contrast: Explain how author described things differently. 4) Conflict(s): Explain problem, disagreement, controversy. 5) Inference: What can you conclude about passage? 6) Author’s purpose: Explain in a basic paragraph (5 sentences) why you think the author wrote passage. 7) Self-Reflection: Write a basic paragraph (5 sentences) explaining why you liked/disliked passage or how it affected you. 8) Summarize: Write a basic paragraph (5 sentences) explaining-who, what, when, where, how, and why about the passage.
Basic one paragraph format-first write
1. Topic sentence: My favorite food is pizza. 2. Support detail one: Pizza has a unique taste. 3. Support detail two: Each pizza has many ingredients. 4. Support detail three: There are many types of pizza. 5. Conclusion: I wished I had a slice of pizza now!
