INTRODUCTION
The Tata Nano is a proposed city car — a small, affordable, rear-engined, four-passenger car aimed primarily at the Indian market. It was first presented by India's Tata Motors at the 9th annual Auto Expo on January 10, 2008, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India. It is priced at Rs 100,000 (appx. US $ 2200).
INNOVATIVE ASPECT IN DESIGN
The Tata Nano responds to the crucial Indian design issue of affordability (it is priced at Rs one lakh), safety and human dignity. The car was designed in Italy’s Institute of Development in Automotive Engineering- with certain changes from Ratan Tata himself.
Some of the unique features that made Tata Nano a hit are:
ENGINE
623 cc two-cylinder petrol engine is made from aluminum. Conventional engines are made from cast iron, adding weight as well as cost to the car. Being smaller and lighter, the cost was lower.
Placed at the rear of the car thus putting less pressure on the steering systems, which allowed for more cost savings. Also, luggage space has been shifted to the front due to this.
Greater fuel efficiency, as placed near fuel tank
Variomatic gear system. Instead of manual gear box in conventional cars it has as gear less or automatic gear transmission.
EXTERIORS
The tubular design of the car instead of the conventional 'rod' design
Use of regular bulbs instead of long life bulbs and also one wing mirror, on the driver’s side.
Minimization of components, particularly steel. It uses less sheet metal, has a smaller and lighter engine than other cars, smaller tube-less tires and a no-frills interior.
Wheels at the corners and the power train at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and maneuverability
INTERIORS
The width of the car is 20% more spacious than Maruti 800.
The AC is without climate control. It has also omitted certain extra features like Power windows, Rear fuel filler, Rear wiper, Rear defogger and Rear armrest.
