Tatjana Soli's 'The War Tourist'

In this short story the war tourist by Tatjana soli is about the feelings of a mother, whose son died in the Vietnam War. Jean was the main person in the story and all was about Jean and her dead son Jamie. She represents herself in this story as a strong person outside, but nobody could realize that she was mentally very ill inside beside of her strong face for her only child.
Jamie’s all friends came back home except Jamie. After Jamie’s death, his friends come to his house every Saturday afternoon and spend a little bit of time with his mother jean. Jean and Jamie’s friend smoked, drank and ate a lot of foods at jean’s house. One day she wanted to know about Jamie’s death. It clearly shows that Jean was not happy in her life; therefore she had divorced and abortions. Her abortion gives a sign that she did not feel that her unborn child could be replacing of her death child. So, anything did not stay in her life for a long time. The only thing she kept continues is drinking. Since she turns to drugs and drinking and her life falls apart. She has a car accident and lost job because of drinking. Finally she went to Vietnam by selling her car. She wanted to see the place where her son died, but still she did not feel good after going there. When jean said “I hate it here. Do you understand?” said to Elaine. This quote is a signal about bad feeling and the scorn of the place where she was at that time.
