Tattoo Discrimination Research Paper
Imagine losing or not being able to get the job you want because you have visible tattoos on your body. This is something a lot of people in our generation today are going through because of how popular the rate of tattoos has gone up. No one deserves to be looked at differently for any reason, especially for a tattoo. Furthermore, said by author Jenna Pewett, “The practice of tattooing has been around for millennia and has had several different purposes. Those purposes could be to identify status or represent community. The ancient Greeks used tattooing to mark those in their community that were criminals or slaves, Romans later adopted this practice. Whether a person has visible tattoos does not stop their ability to do a job. You can’t force a person with tattoos on their arms to cover them up, if say long sleeve shirts are not the proper uniform, just as if you say that a woman can’t wear a hijab as it is not part of the company culture. Companies claim to be “diverse” but want everyone to look similar, how one professional dresses in the office is way different to how that same person dresses when meeting with clients. But let’s be honest here, how many people show up to an interview with their tattoos showing anyways. Like I said before, no one deserves to be looked at differently because they have art on their body. The way a person looks has nothing to do with the type of personality he or she has. Someone can have the ugliest tattoos you’ve ever seen but can also be the sweetest person you know. If companies were smart, they should allow tattoos in the workplace that way it attracts attention to the store and actually does something different in the world. I don’t see why people make this a big deal in our world today, tattoos are part of this generation we are going through today and adults make it seem as if nothing but bad kids are doing it. People do it to bring happiness and creativeness into this ugly world we live in
