Summary on "An Incident in the Shabashi Household"
The story, "An Incident in the Shabashi Household" plays an excellent role in woman vs. the constructs of arranged marriages. This story was taken place in Egypt in the twentieth century where women's freedom was quite limited. In the Arabic culture women were usually sold into marriages by their parents and never had any say into their decision making. However, this story pertains to the Egyptian lifestyle in many different ways. This story has two main characters, Nilma and Nilma's mother which was never given a name. Nilma was a young girl who still lived with her family. Her father Ghobashi went to Libya for work and won't be returning until another year. However, her mother had to stay home and look after the household, two kirats of land and the buffalo. The family was a low middle class family that worked to pay off Hamden's wage. Not too long after Nilmas father had left, Nilmas mother had noticed that her daughters body had begun to ripen. Every month for a bout a week long Nilma would Hang up the rags as if she would get her period when really she didn't get it. Her mother wasn't as stupid as Nilma had thought because soon after she began to realize that Nilma was pregnant. Nilma had to hide it from her family because she didn't want to sham her father.
Usually in the Egyptian culture woman's identity is determined by their place in society. With that being said her mother decides to send Nilma to cairo because she finds out that her daughter is pregnant with an illegitimate child for months now. She doesn't want the father to know because he is in Libya working to buy Nil,ma a pure silk wedding dress for her soon to be arranged marriage. However the story ends with Nilmas dad still in Libya, Nilmas mother running the house and Nilma being sent to cairo to have her pregnancy there before the return of her father.
