Teacher unions were formed upon efforts to unite the teachers and give them a voice to better negotiate with school districts. Many say that schools are so terrified to say anything negative about a teacher because of the concern of a lawsuit, if that teacher is backed by the union. There is also much controversy because of the protection that is given to them through the teacher tenure system. The teacher tenure is a method that is practiced in 46 states. Teachers qualify after they have been employed for 1-5 years. The teacher is then protected by the union from being fired over personal or political motives.
