Case Study Patient is a newly diagnosed 35 year old Caucasian female, Christian, married with 3 children ages 5-10, works full time as landscape architect, husband is an electrician. Pt was admitted to hospital for edema, fatigue, fever, joint pain, and rash to face and hands. Thorough H&P, consult with rheumatologist, lab tests, and imaging were used to confirm the diagnosis of SLE. Patient is now being discharged to home.
Assessment Since this is a new diagnosis pt will need extensive education on disease. Pt is very motivated to learn how to control the disease process in order to be able to continue working and caring for her 3 young children. Pt is college educated, there will be no issues of not being able to comprehend teaching or handouts. Pt is on a med-surg floor, in a private room, so the environment will be condusive to learning. Pt has sufficient resources/health insurance to be able to cope with financial impact of disease.
Motivation Motivation is the activation of goal-oriented behavior, is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic. The psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal. Due to the patient’s belief in God, her locus of control is directed toward external factors; believing that God is in control and everything happens for a reason, but she is also reasonable enough to know that there are things she can do to affect the disease process.
