Thoroughly washing your hands can be one of the best ways to prevent the spread of pathogens that cause illnesses. Our bodies have several lines of defense to fight infections. It is very important to do what we can do to avoid the pathogens from entering our system in the first place. Our hands pick up microscopic pathogens from objects that were touched by people who may not have washed their hands very well. When we forget to wash our hands or don’t wash them properly, we can spread pathogens from our hands to our internal systems by touching other parts of our body. During this lab activity, my partner and I will test the effectiveness of different hand-washing times, techniques, and materials. The objective of this activity is to answer the question: How long does it take to effectively wash your hands? I hypothesize that it takes around 35 seconds to effectively wash your hands, because it takes a while to rub off all the germs on your hands. I think the longer you wash your hands for, the cleaner they will get.…

The World Health Organization and the United States Center for Disease Control have been in the forefront of efforts to educate people regarding this very important topic. As a nurse, every day that I am on the job, I teach patients about appropriate hand hygiene as well as practicing these techniques myself. Medical research has proven that the simple task of carrying out hand washing rituals in a methodical, organized and timely manner, greatly reduces the spread of disease. However, despite years of knowledge and studies attesting to the effectiveness of this simple task in improving our health, there continues to be a serious deficit in the number of people who habitually practice proper hand-washing. One of the more recent studies on the subject was done by Michigan State University researchers in 2013. Lead researcher, Professor Carl Borchgrevink stated in the Journal of Environmental Health article, “Hand Washing Practices in a College Town Environment” (2013) that only 5% of the 3,749 participants in the study were practicing proper hand…

On the other hand, medical hand hygiene pertains to the hygiene practices related to the administration of medicine and medical care which aimed at preventing or minimizing disease and the spread of these diseases.
