About two years ago, the hospital started a program in which employees serving as “spies” observed and reported how often doctors and nurses washed their hands or “gelled” (used hand sanitizer dispensers posted outside each patient room) when entering and leaving patient rooms. Initial surveys showed that the compliance rate was 31%. Soon after, the hospital began a major push to increase hand washing, including lecturing offenders and promoting hand hygiene through screensaver messages on every computer in the hospital.…

One of my goals is to promote healthy habits. To establish and maintain a healthy environment is to prevent the spread of germs and promote healthy eating habits. Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children in my care, because they are in close contact with each other. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. I wash my hands and wear gloves before and after handling food, helping with toileting, changing diapers and cleaning noses. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. Cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily and mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area and sanitized at the end of the day. I teach the children about healthy eating on a daily basis. At lunch and snack time we talk about the healthy foods and not so healthy foods that they are eating and what food is best for their growing bodies. I have two weeks of lesson…

A working relationship is different to a personal relationship because you need to be professional. You cannot get emotionally attached to service users, or let your emotions come in the way of preforming your job role. Although with a work relationship with other colleagues, you can support each other. You must only support each other with work related issues. You must not bring your personal life or problems into the work place, or let it affect the way you preform your job. If you are having problems within your personal life then you can disclose these problems with your manager if you feel they may affect your job performance. With the service users, you are there to support them, not the other way around. You should not unload personal issues to them. But if they need someone to listen to their problems you should do so in a professional and caring manner. You need to be aware of what responses you give, as unlike in a personal relationship where you can respond with your thoughts and not worry about what you say, you cannot with a working relationship. In a work place you have no choice about who you work with, you are not there to be friends, but to work together to make sure the service users are receiving the correct care and that the home runs smoothly.…

Danica, I really enjoyed what you had to say regarding that taking shortcuts only increases the risk of a patient getting an infectious disease. I am nursing in the fall and found it very interesting that you have watched many staff members going from room to room without washing their hands. This can be a very big hazard in the sense that the previous patient could have had an infection and then it is now passed on to the next patient. I also believe that washing your hands is a very important step to take to prevent spreading infectious diseases. Although I have not yet started nursing, since watching this video and becoming more aware of the cleanness in healthcare facilities that I will be more aware of what others are doing around me.…
