Tears, Idle Tears
Tears, Idle Tears

1) The author in the story, “Tears, Idle Tears” Elizabeth Bowen, Uses an in-direct method of presentation for Mrs. Dickinson, Her personality is mainly implicated through her speech throughout the story. Mrs. Dickinson is a very cruel, self centred lady; her main motivation in the story is to look good to all her friends or basically look good anywhere in general. She is the type of person that couldn’t handle shame brought upon somebody else, so her idea of assessing the situation would be to distance herself from it. In the story “Tears, Idle Tears”, Elizabeth Bowen created the character Mrs. Dickinson. Mrs. Dickinson, I believe – is the “Strong widow that can’t break down” In this story. It’s what she wants everyone to see her as mainly. As for a parent, Elizabeth Bowen wants the readers to believe that Mrs. Dickinson is misunderstood and somewhat of a heartless parent when is comes to emotions. For example, she is too embarrassed to be around her child when he is upset. Fredrick needed the comfort and sympathy moms can provide but Mrs. Dickinson could not see such a thing. Instead, she resorts to telling her son Fredrick, “You stay here and look at that duck until you’ve stopped that noise”

2) “Tears, Idle Tears” by Elizabeth Bowen, Shows many differences between Fredrick and Mrs. Dickinson. Fredrick is a very sensitive boy who can’t handle the fact that his father has passed. It’s traumatizing for any young boy. Mrs. Dickinson on the other hand see’s the situation a little differently and doesn’t see why Fredrick is so upset. Her husband passing did not phase her what so ever. The story proves that there were really no signs of grief in public. It almost seems as if she see’s sensitivity as a form of embarrassment.

Fredrick and the lady on the bench from “Tears, Idle Tears” were completely opposite from Fredrick and his mothers relation. I’ll elaborate, Mrs. Dickinson does not understand Fredrick nor see

The opposite to Mrs Johnstone is Mrs Lyons; childless, wealthy and under the impression that money can solve any problem, Mrs Lyons also shows how warm and caring Mrs Johnstone is as a mother. Concerned more with her reputation than Eddie or his real mother, Mrs Lyons attempts to ensure that the two are kept as far away from each other as possible. Nevertheless, the “cruel” Mrs Johnstone does not accept Mrs Lyons’ bribe (“…the mother so cruel, there’s a stone in place of her heart…”) and continues to love Eddie. Mrs Johnstone is a typical tragic heroine, whose actions accidently result in a disastrous event and the punishment she receives from that act is quite unfair. More or less, she is a good mother, a woman who makes the best of things and is proud of the fact she is getting by. It was circumstance that caused her to make a pact with Mrs Lyons, a pact that would ultimately result in the deaths of her twin boys.…

    Gwen Harwood Essay

Structure is used in many of Harwood’s poems to challenge the dominant perception of the happy, caring mother. In ‘Suburban sonnet,’ the structure is (obviously) the sonnet, two four line stanzas followed by a six-line stanza. This choice is deliberate as the traditional romanticised love poem jars against the reality presented in the poem. Similarly, ‘Burning Sappho’ challenges the dominant stereotypes of the time however, rather than a sonnet, the poem’s structure is also relevant to the poem’s criticisms, thus revealing a duality in the mother’s actions and inner thoughts. Throughout the day, the mother is constantly interrupted by her supposed ‘duties’ and ‘roles.’ “Scandals and Pregnancies” mediates that the women (a kind friend) talk, however the subject of the conversation presents a typecast of stereotypical gossip, therefore positioning the reader to perceive their conversation as lacking substance. In contrast to this stereotype however, the persona’s thoughts are deeply…

The metaphors Charlotte makes for her mother and Miss Hancock are very accurate. Charlotte compares her mother to a “white picket fence” with “thorny bushes and barbed wire” on the other side (72). Charlotte’s mother is a very beautiful person on the outside. She has great hair and a great figure, but deep down she is not that good of a person. She is a very emotionless and stern woman. In the last few paragraphs of the novel she tells Charlotte that Miss Hancock’s death was her own fault. On the other hand, Miss Hancock is compared to a cake. The cake “was frosted by someone unschooled in the art of cake decoration” but the inside of the cake “was rich and soft and very delicious” (80). Miss Hancock looks quite unattractive on the outside because of her age, clothing, and excessive amounts of makeup, but she is a great person. Her students all really care for her and even decides to get her a trophy. She teaches with great enthusiasm and use a lot of emotion. She is also more of a mother to Charlotte than her actual mother is. Charlotte’s metaphors tells us much about the truths of these two characters.…

In A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner writes a pathetic woman, Miss Emily, to show the true lives of the rich and his frustration with society. Faulkner’s goal of Miss Emily’s alienation shows wealthy people’s lives aren’t perfect and how grief can impact people. To show this goal, the author uses the theme of truth vs. reality. For example, “Being left alone and a pauper, she had become humanized”(2), shows that the town people initially thinking that she is better than everyone else; however after she loses her dad, she becomes more ordinary. Even though the town people think of Emily as an eccentric and haughty Southern belle, they envy her; she’s wealthy and the town people are not. However, since Emily isolates herself from her peers, the town people never see her.…

‘Mother Who gave me Life’ shows how Harwood expresses her love and compassion towards her mother, and the influences she had in her life, showing its relevance in today’s world. In some interpretations Harwood focus’s on Romanticism referring to nature in ‘thresholds of ice, rock, fire’ as she describes humankind’s evolution. However in my opinion the psychoanalytical interpretation dominates this poem because she explains the love and duties of a mother’s sequence, ‘The Sister’ referring to all women are sisters, shown as a sequence of life through memories and thoughts. Harwood shows respect towards her mother in the metaphor ‘It is not for my children I walk… It is for you’ emphasising the centuries of women through time. The literary, critic Patricia Makeham believes this poem reflects on ‘understanding of herself through descendants whilst acquiring skills of life’ through ‘wild daughters becoming woman’ and the noun ‘wisdom’, this I comply with. Harwood appreciates her mother’s qualities of life in recognising an unbroken chain of woman’ as a symbol of family, this relationship of daughter to mother is still strongly bonded in today’s society and…

Besides their similarities, Miss Hancock and Charlottes mother are so different that they contrast each other. Miss Hancock is unmarried woman who encourages Charlotte to be expressive. On the other hand, Charlotte’s Mother doesn’t support or care much about Charlotte’s enthusiasm for the subject. As a child, playing with toys wasn’t allowed because it made a mess “A toy ceased to be a toy once it left the toy cupboard” (p 65). Miss Hancock loves teaching children, so if she were Charlotte’s mother, she would tell her to make as much of a mess as she wants. Miss Hancock and Charlotte’s mother are an example of character foil.…

Mrs. Dickinson strives to maintain her image in the eyes of others. Mrs. Dickinson “… [is] one of those woman who have an unfailing sense of what to say, and say it: despair, perversity, or stubborn virtue must actuate them” (111). Mrs. Dickinson understands that being harsh on Fredrick (her son), hurts him extensively but she continues to be harsh. She doesn’t have much concern towards Fredrick’s feelings; Mrs. Dickinson just ignores Fredrick when he cries. Mrs. Dickinson punishes her son for crying in public, by not taking him to the zoo. Despite Mrs. Dickinson’s ignorant behavior towards her son she tells everyone, “… there is Fredrick. I bound to put him firs t… “(113). Mrs. Dickinson rejects marriage proposals by saying that she cares about Fredrick first; whereas the truth behind her rejection is that she likes to be seen as a very independent woman, since she is a single mother. Mrs. Dickinson “[lifts] her chin with that noble, decided movement so many people liked” (111). Mrs. Dickinson adores displaying herself as a gallant woman by keeping her chin up. She only acts as if she cares about Fredrick because it helps strengthen her false image of being self-reliant. Mrs. Dickinson strives to impress whoever she…
