Technology-Based Interventions

The purpose of this study was to see whether patient preferences for technology based interventions varies by gender. The hypothesis was that gender would play a significant role in a persons attitude towards technology .The study had two goals, the first was to analyze whether demographic factors correlated differentially with a patient’s preference for intervention for males and females, and the second was to examine whether the influence of gender played a role in a persons preferences for and concerns about technology. The research showed that women were more likely to use computers, Internet, and social networks. For the people who smoked, were depressed, had drug/alcohol use or injury, gender modified the relationship between demographic factors and preference for technology based health information. There were no significant demographic differences between the male and female patients. Most participants of men and 90.8% of women preferred a technology format for at least 1 type of health information. It was divided by gender and there were many different demographics such as ethnicity, race, income, baseline technology use, and interest in technology-based information, however education was not studied. The study was conducted in one urban academic emergency department in the Northeast with only English-speaking adults. The attitudes in this population may not be generalizable to other populations with different demographics, education levels, and social norms.
