Technology In Ayn Rand's Anthem
In the novel Anthem, the society lacks technology in comparison to other places. The people are still using candles, when electricity has already been discovered in the past. This must mean that they had technology before, but they got rid of it for some reason. My theory is that they had technology before, but they were starting to get lazy and corrupt from it, so they got rid of technology. With the use of technology today, humans are getting more and more lazy. For example, in the past, people had to push a lawnmower that didn’t have a motor to cut grass. Now, all people have to do is turn on a key and push a gas pedal while sitting down. In Anthem society could of had technology that was advanced enough where humans weren’t hardly ever …show more content…
For example, when Equality discovers electricity, in what we can infer of a subway tunnel,”But terror struck the men of the council. They leapt to their feet, they ran from the table, and they stood pressed against the wall, huddled together.”(70), this must mean that technology has existed before and they got rid of it. The World Council of Scholars were afraid of the light bulb and they argued that the candles were a better method. This shows that long ago, technology existed, but was destroyed or hidden or otherwise, the scholars wouldn’t have been afraid because they are scholars and they should know what electricity …show more content…
There has to be some reason behind the removal of almost all technology. The only technology that they have now is candles. They have had candles for 100 years. You would think that within a hundred years, that they could have discovered or invented some other method of providing lighting. Considering that in the past, society had already invented electricity that could power subway stations, you would think that someone in the one-hundred plus years could have invented or discovered the existing electricity and actually convinced the World Council of Scholars to accept it. Something really bad must have happened to convince society to remove technology that greatly improves people’s

In the philosophical epic of Ayn Rand, entitled Atlas Shrugged, Rand allows much room for interpretation as to the meaning of the title of her work. As the reader progresses through the different stages of the book, their translation of the title and its relation to the story evolves. Through parts one and two of the book, one could interpret the title to represent two things: First, it suggests that, Francisco D'Anconia, a titan within the copper and mining industry, is Atlas. It was his strategic collapse of D'Anconia mines that seemed to shake the economy, with his rebellion creating a ripple effect that devastated the economy, as if Atlas used the rest of his strength to make the world suffer. It also, however, indicated to be in reference…

Inventions are not easily accepted into the society. In Anthem, there is a set process for allowing a new invention into society. It is a very long process that takes a long time. For example, the candle took fifty years to be approved and then, to re-fit the Plans. These Plans appear to be like the constitution, a set of rules, and amending them isn’t an easy and quick process. These plans have a very powerful influence in Anthem…

Anthem by Ayn Rand is set in the heart in a dystopian world of the future, and in stark contrast to other dystopian novels, the world of Anthem is technologically undeveloped instead of advanced, is quite primitive, and devolved from modern-day technology, but with the conditions for technological processes, it is no wonder that society is as primitive and ancient as it is. For one, technology and new ideas are considered not to be real, if not all men approve of a certain concept or invention. The more academically advanced are discouraged to use their wisdom, as they try to make everyone equal. Also, with the transgression of preference, it is hard for one to truly feel interested and dedicated to their jobs, making society near to impossible to progress. In the heart of a devolved totalitarian world, the pace of advancement is slow, and a near to impossible process, due to restrictment towards its citizens, and the elimination of all individuality in a person, in aspects of ideas, smarts, and thoughts…

The society in Anthem is corrupt because the members are living off one another and fear living as individuals. They have no identity and are pretty much living for the community. The word "I" doesn’t even exist, everyone has to call themselves by "we". " We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE..." (Rand 19). They are not allowed to think of life as theirs. The only source of identity they do have is the group identity, all…

All of our technology has come a very long way over the years. From the very first phone or television that was invented, it is unbelievable how these same devices look and function in today’s world. You now have flat screen televisions instead of tube televisions. We advanced from the first phone to now having satellite phones and cell phones. Modern technology is very amazing in one aspect, but very crippling to us in another. We have become so dependent on it that we would be lost without all of our gadgets.…

A lifestyle without the modern gadgets sounds quite a hard life to live. But let’s look deep and analyze both sides of this. Life de-modernized would be a time consuming one requiring a lot of time and effort, there is no work which cannot be done without the assistance of machines and there is not a single area of human activity where machines don’t have to be used. No one can deny the fact that gadgets have not only simplified our lives but also made them more comfortable and luxurious. But on the contrary man’s dependence on them has increased so much that we just cannot do without them at all. If cabs go off the road we cannot reach our destinations. No cooking without LPG cylinder or cooking flame. No, we can’t do even simple calculations, what to talk of washing without washing machine or electricity. If electricity fails, life for each one of us comes to a standstill as all gadgets are operated with it be it AC, TV, computer, a telephone, or any other modern appliance. Time is very precious in today’s era. Everyone wants to do things in very short span. The quotation “Stitch in time saves nine” means if you finish something in time, you will be able to do ten things in the time you saved. Keeping this in view, scientists and technologists developed many new things to save as much time as possible. In each and every sphere of life we can find machines and gadgets that save our time a lot. Whether it is business, transport, education, communication, new technology did a lot.…

The following reasons can account for the above phenomenon. Firstly, traditional technologies are always considered ineffective while the new sciences are always highly efficient, because modern science and technology facilitate both our daily and academic life a lot, with which we can save much money and time. Secondly, we can’t neglect the negative effects of globalization it has on culture and society. In this globalized world, cities are becoming clones of each other, and people are converging into fake stereotypes; gone are the unique cities that carry so much history and culture in every corner. Lost are the enriching cultural differences and specificities that make a society uniquely what it is. Morocco looks like Spain,London looks like Paris, which looks like Madrid. Restaurants serving this or that country’s traditional food are drowned out by the huge fast food chains. Beautiful traditional clothing is lost between the new bulk-made looks created by the big brands, people look alike, eat alike and dress alike whether they’re in New York, New Delhi or Morocco.Thirdly, it is costly to protect the traditional culture, especially the maintenance and repair of the historical buildings.…
