Technology Mental Illness
As 21st century has dramatically incorporated digital media into our day-to-day lives, we have yet to explore the negative ramifications of such digital devices and how it can generate a harmful effect. Ironically some of the digital devices that were designed to help mankind are sometimes causing the most damage in some unprecedented manner. In some cases, the most vulnerable population's (e.g., children, individuals with mental illness, and economically disadvantaged individuals) often become easy prey. Individuals with a known history of certain mental illnesses should not invest in those technological devices, which may create mental instability.
One of the particular scenario in which a digital device impacted its user negatively was the case of a young lady who started using Fitbit band to reach her exercise goals. Although this may seem like a normal fitness technique, however, the person using this digital device had an extensive history of various eating disorders from an early age. The same issues were now threatening this particular individual who had seen a therapist for one year to help her get over such devastating concerns. It took one week for this young lady to be physically addicted to such digital device, which

Investing can be done in various ways including time commitment, financial investment, and the amount of diligence placed in an activity. Although this particular person was able to stop using Fitbit after few months it could have lead to long-term complications. This young lady could have gone down the same path over again and could have dealt with a mental illness in a much severe manner. Also just because she was able to avoid long-term “relapse” does not necessarily mean that it will work out for other individuals as

People use their technology so consistently that they completely lose sight of what is happening around them, and their interactions with the people around them lessen to what can clearly be a deadly degree. No matter if it is relations with people within a community or simply the day-to-day communications with strangers on a train, the important aspects of people’s social health suffer tremendously when they rely on technology too…

In Nicholas Carr’s book, “The Shallows: What The Internet is Doing to our Brains,” he makes the powerful point that in order to assume technology’s power, especially intellectual technology, we must pay a particularly high price. Carr states this idea in one quote from his book, “The price we pay to assume technologies power is alienation. The toll can be particularly high with our intellectual technologies. the tools of the mind amplify and in turn numb the most intimate, the most human, of our natural capacities- those for reason perception, memory, emotion(pg 211).” This price for intellectual technologies can range from a lowered ability to pull up memorized information, a shorter attention span, having a harder time learning new information, or even a changed perception of our world. All of these points help show how the internet is affecting our brains physically and mentally.…

The digital age is forming our brains into 140 characters and making us express ourselves in little yellow faces. When we’re bored we go straight for technology. We are more distracted, have decreased attention spans and most importantly addicted. Science has gone a long way and so far has proven that the technology produced from it has mind altering abilities that affect our daily lives.…

As an illustration, Turkle states “Might such robotic arrangements even benefit the elderly and their children in the short run in a feel-good sense but be bad for us in our lives as moral being?” (280). The author claims that because of many good benefits of technology, people become more addicted to modern machines and the virtual world than their real life. And because of attaching to technology, people seem to lose their respect for human beings. I completely agree with Turkle on this argument about the issue that being strongly dependent on technology could affect or change our morality negatively. Specifically, I have the example of my neighbor’s son. He is just twelve years old, and he is addicted to violent games on the internet. Thus, he repeats aggression and violent action from those games, and he tends to use violence in real life to solve his problems. Once in the morning, I saw him throw his breakfast and his backpack towards his parents as they walked him to the school bus. Because he just wanted to stay home and play games all day instead of going to school. He pretended to be the characters in violent games, so he was very aggressive in solving his problems in reality. I feel sorry for his parents and him because the affect of playing computer games makes him a bad child, losing the respect for his parents. Moreover, I have another example of this issue that demonstrates…

Imagine going back in time and staying there permanently. Out of all the things that will be missed, there is no doubt that the one thing would be technology. The Shallows: What Internet is Doing to Our Brains is nonfiction book written by Nicholas Carr who asserts and cautions the effects that internet has on everyone to this day and even more so in the future. People nowadays can communicate with people all around the world using many different types of communications such as social networking sites, cell phones, emails, etc. Carr brings in many different scientific research as well as a couple of personal experiences to show the great change in technology and the internet. The author chose to write The Shallows from an epiphany he had realized, “It (his brain) was hungry. It was demanding to be fed by the net feed...I wanted to check email, click links, do some googling. I wanted to be connected” (Carr 16). The way that technology has changed and developed the internet has made Carr want to stress the fact that although technology is very useful, it can be very harmful to peoples’ brain in a way that it affects a person’s deeper level of thinking.…

The first showed “at least a third of young children” (397) have the ability to use technology in their bedrooms. The second study found that it is common for tweens and teens to use other devices while on the computer. Watkins implies that learning to use media in the bedroom and multitask at such a young age increases their risk down the road. Consequences could include death, as the 2008 train accident showed. The conductor of the train was on his cell phone instead of operating the train, which neglected him from seeing the warnings and commands to stop the train (400). The result was twenty-five deaths because the conductor was trying to multitask. Watkins’ use of this example appeals to pathos, as death is a very emotional topic. The audience naturally believes what he is saying, as disobeying him could result in another…

In today’s age, technology has become a central aspect of many people’s lives. This new tech has brought with it many benefits that people did not have years ago and has helped bring the world together. With the benefit of cellphones, for example, someone can use them to stay in touch with friends and family while they are away and don’t have access to a phone. This connectivity has become an essential part in today’s society since people can now work anywhere that they want. However, this technology also has downfalls that negatively affect the same person’s life. The distractions that technology brings can be seen clearly with someone’s work performance since they will likely do poorly on a project. The way that technology affects someone’s life varies within the different part of their life. With the multitude of benefits that…

Matthew Wisnioski, in his article “Against Technology,” likens the engagement of people in social media and other forms of digital technology activities as a pathology of the brain. In describing the addiction -level of anticipation for messages and self-expression through tweets, interacting at Facebook to keep loneliness at bay, and playing Angry Birds for hours, the author uses neurological and psychological terms such as dopamine, narcissistic impulses, and synapses. In the next paragraph, he points out that beyond being sources of addictions, current technologies pose a threat to human existence. Referencing British politician, businesswoman, and neuroscientist Susan Greenfield, Wisnioski explains that the brain is designed to evolutionarily adapt to the environment but that digital technologies are changing at a pace so rapid that individuals and governments regulations are unable to keep up. This has led to adverse effects such as the decline in children’s outdoor physical activity and in an extreme case, even the…

How do E-Services affect our health on a day-to-day basis? The answer is anything but concrete. Many E-services are available in our highly technological age and more are being invented and being introduced every day. The fact of the matter is that they do affect our lives, but the bigger question is are they in a positive or negative way. Certain E-services provide entertainment while others make our daily tasks extremely easier. Some E-services open an avenue to a larger community and some let criminal activity multiply. This report will look at two smaller issues regarding certain E-services that are impacting everyday life: the detrimental effects of texting while driving and the neurological implications of video games. Each of these services play a significant role in American culture and our society today and will continue to be around as long as E-services survive.…

As stated by the U.S. Census Bureau, “Millennials, or America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and represent more than one-quarter of the nation’s population. Their size exceeds that of the 75.4 million baby boomers” (Buraeau, 2015). The very thought of all these people being harmed and stripped of a real childhood is shocking. This is tens of millions of children that are now young adults who have experienced a great deal of their life in front of a screen. This generation is filled with people who have made technology a priority in their life and now have to deal with the consequences. People often state that everything is okay in moderation. Eating in moderation, exercising in moderation, and in this case, technology in moderation. Technology will always advance, and there is no way to stop that. Nevertheless, what could reduce the harm of technology is using it in a way that does not consume one’s entire life. In addition, future generations need to be taught to understand when enough is enough. More tough love, independence, and patience would be more constructive to children, rather than the impatience and dependence that have resulted from excessive exposure to technology. Psychologist Doreen Dodgen-Magee voices her opinion by saying, “With technology, we are embracing this thing that could be a wonderful side dish or accompaniment to our lives” (Dodgen-Magee, 2010). If technology and social media are only used in a positive and helpful way, it can be less harmful to people’s lives. If these changes were made future generations would benefit…

Just addiction to technology can cause accidents to many people. One accident that can be caused by addiction is a car crash. A person can get a text while driving and a have the urge to read it.
