The Dumbest Generation
Ever since the advent of the modern digital culture, there have been some heated discussions on the topic of whether technology is a foe or a friend. Some people argue that it is influencing us negatively, scattering our attention and diffusing our concentration, while others believe otherwise, suggesting that it is making our lives more efficient and convenient. The emergence of such technology not only enhances some of our fundamental cognitive abilities, but also enables us to explore more of what is we are truly interested in. Modern technology has its merits. As Bauerlein points out in his article “the Dumbest Generation”, the digital revolution has provided us with “miraculous quick and effortless contact with information.” Indeed, we are the generation surrounded by technology, and the immediate access to countless of information has definitely aided us in many aspects of the modern society. Researching information has become …show more content…
Rather, our thinking capabilities flourish. As Begley mentions, the IQ scores of every country that keep them have been rising since the 1930s. The tests gauge “not knowledge but pure thinking capability”, which reflects an increase in our cognitive abilities, such as to“think critically and logically, to analyze an argument, to learn and remember, to see analogies, to distinguish fact from opinion”(Souce 2). Furthermore, a cognitive scientist at Carnegie Mellon University suggests that as long as “new information technology exercises our minds provides more information”, which is precisely what it is continually doing, “it has to be improving thinking abilities” (Source 2). Clearly, the modern digital technology is not making us less thoughtful; instead, it could largely contribute to the strengthening of them, contrary to what most critics of the digital culture would like to

The internet has become the number one source for information. It is quick and easy. Some argue that it is a distraction, while others argue that it is the best thing since slice bread. In the article “Is Google Making us Stupid?” by Carr he used a form of ethos and factual evidence to help get his point across to his readers. He argues how technology is hindering people and causing them to become lazy, therefore causing harm towards today’s society. Throughout the article “Mind Over Mass Media” Steven Pinker, also uses a form of ethos and factual evidence to help voice his opinion on how technology is serving more of a benefit. Some believe that people are becoming more intelligent because of the use of…

The brain is one of the most important aspects to the human body. It is used for one’s thinking, personality, intelligence, memory, etc. According to a direct quote pulled from Begley’s article, cognitive scientist Marcel Just of Carnegie Mellon University says, “"Insofar as new information technology exercises our minds and provides more information, it has to be improving thinking ability." Everything he states is based on how technology positive impacts our brains. However, critics may say, “Technology is frying their brains.” Although this may sound realistic according to the amount of time this generation does spend with our faces in computer screen, there is still a positive side to all of it. The generation under thirty necessarily may not be frying their brains however, reconstructing them to become more logical and complex…

According to Lauren Shinozuka, in her essay, “The Dangers of Digital Distractedness,” we are a digital generation. She asserts we are celebrated for our aptitude in effortless interactions with society through technology. However, the author questions the effect that this mass use of digital media has on societal and personal interactions and suggests we are alienating ourselves from those around us. She offers the point that we have developed an obsession with high-tech communication and are afflicted by fruitlessly attempting to do too many things at once, as well as automating our interpersonal interactions, disconnecting from genuine contact, and promoting a falsified version of…

A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a group of people, in other words known as a stereotype. Stereotype, the word that was going through my mind when the read the article “Generation Text: The Dark Digital Ages: 13 to 17”. The article written by Mark Bauerlein really had me thinking about how someone could perceive our generation in such a stereotypical way, which basically lumped all of us, with our unique and contrasting ideologies together. After reading Bauerlein’s article he makes our generation sound like kids and young adults who would do anything to acquire social acceptance from our peers. My emotional response to Bauerlein’s essay was upsetting. He sounds oblivious just in the sense that he merely categorizes all kids in the generation [our generation] in a stereotypical manner. Not only does he…

Students are expected to be more perspicacious, and to many, the idea of technology downgrades a person’s intellect because it makes an objective easier to accumulate. Mark Bauerlein refers to younger people and states that “the intellectual habits that complement them are slipping” (Source 1). This is untrue because although the younger generation is more technologically advanced, this is not a element that downgrades their intelligence. They can use this component to their own benefit as for example, when trying to find the definition of a word, or needing to find a formula, one could search it up online instead of searching through a book which can be exceedingly time consuming. Such constituents are a helpful benefit that does not bring down one’s intelligence or makes a person “dumber” but helps with making a project easier which in all leads to the same…

As we know and have read, technology is everywhere; it permeates our lives, even when we don’t want it to. Apparently, “what’s wrong with kids these days,” is that they are too connected. However, others point out that adults, too, are rather focused on their technological lives. But does this make us literate in technology? As an educator, I’ve seen students use certain programs and applications to supplement their projects, yet many do not know how to research beyond a simple Google search. Where does this leave us? Is too much technology too much of a good thing? Are we really using it to the best of our ability? Is it taking over our brainz?! This project is an attempt to investigate, through an examination of personal experience and by using The Shallows as a guide, your history with technology and the ways in which its use has affected your life.…
