Most of the material that are encountered in everyday life are not pure substances. Materials ranging from cement, food and ink are formed from physical combinations of various substances called mixtures. A mixture is a type of material that consists of two or more different substances that are not chemically combined. All mixtures can be separated back into its original state except for those that undergo irreversible change. A mixture can take the form of alloys, solutions, suspensions and colloids. The form of mixture that was used for this experiment was solutions and suspension. Solution is homogenous mixture that forms when a solute has dissolved in a solvent. Suspension is a heterogenous mixture consisting of liquid and a solid. In the instance of suspension the particle is insoluble so that it is disperesed throughout the liquid. A distinct part of suspension is that the liquid and particles will sendiment in the container it’s being …show more content…
The technique used to separate the components of a mixture depens on the physical propoerties of the materials being used. The seperaton process is used to transform a mixture into two or more distinct products. Filtration is the most common method of separation of an insoluble solid from a liquid. The filtration process involves the use of a filter paper being placed in a funnel. The filter drains through the filter paper into the beaker. This leaves the residue inside the filter paper and the filtrate in the beaker. Evaporation is the technique most commonly used when recovering the solute from a solution. The evaporation process occurs when the solution is heated until only the solid residue remains as the solvent has evaporated and turned into a gas state. The objective of the experiment was use knowledge gained on separating techniques to separate the heterogenous mixture of sand, salt and
