Abstract
In the 1950’s several Latin American Countries created a short time limited “soap opera” which tackled looming topics of the day. This has become the world phenomena called telenovelas. Over the past 65 years they have changed the global landscape of how we look at and talk about social issues. In this paper we will discuss of how telenovelas was created, who funds them, their impact on the media of two main countries that have produced them, Mexico and Brazil, then lastly how they are changing the world landscape.
Globalization of Telenovelas
Telenovelas was created in 1950 with a show called “Your Life Belongs to Me”, which was shown twice a week in prime time. This show would spark a trend that increasingly became more popular, not just in Mexico, Brazil and Cuba, but would have far reaching impacts that would be worldwide.
Introduction
So what is telenovela? Dictionary.com states: “television soap opera, usually having a limited number of episodes.” (1). Unlike the “American” soap operas that seem to last for an unlimited amount of time, these programs last for a limited amount of time. These programs usually only last about 12 months and tackle many different social issues of the day. The reason why they have a definite amount of time is to add credence to the performances. Just because a series ends, doesn’t mean that the characters die. Many time, if the characters resonate with the public their character will live on in different episodes.
Telenovelas is formatted into six different generes. These catagories are;”
Working-class melodrama, which is easy to understand and contains less explicit content. They typically feature a poor woman who falls in love with a rich man whose family spurns her, such as María la del barrio (1995).
Historical romance is set in the past, such as the colonial period (Martín Garatuza, 1986), the restoration of the Republic (El carruaje, 1972), the late 19th Century (El
