Temptation Bundling Essay
Temptation bundling not always works for everyone, some people for example are able to study when there is no noise or distraction, and others might need music or TV to be proactive. Many people think they need a pleasant task with an unpleasant to be able to accomplish a task, but in reality you need something to stimulate your brain either two pleasant or none. For example, for me workout is a supper pleasant activity and I combine it with listening to music; I listen to music not because exercise is unpleasant I listen because it gives me more energy and I do get a reward, been fit and healthy.

In 1972, Standford University's Walter Mischel sat down children at a table in a room one by one and gave them a plate with one marshmallow on it. The children had a choice: they could wait 15 minutes and get to eat the 2 marshmallows our they could eat the one marshmallow right away. If he or she rang the bell causing the instructor to come back into the room. Then the instructor would leave the room and actually watch and monitor the children one by one. The instructor err taking the kids to see what we're or to what extent are the kids abilities to hold out in the exercise to teach them about consequences to their choices. The children who had waited showed he or she had the ability to be more patient for the greater reward. It also shown that the children who could wait could occupy their minds. The ones who rand the bell on could not resist temptation and were impatient, lacking self-control. He or she only saw what was in front of them and that was what they wanted. Nottrusting in the wait that would lead to the greater reward. After the instructor treated or did the trial on all children they went back into the room with the children or the child at that time. they watched the tape of that could with them at that time. The instructor asked the child a series of questionsto see why they made the choices that or she made. To kno was going through their minds at the time also. Some were focused on the bigger prizeand some the marshmallow offered at the time. this was a mental process. Other's was in the bigger picture process. Which would be to wait and to get both of the marshmallows. I feel the children who kept self control an will be more successful in life. Rushing through life or life choices will not guarantee the best answers or resulr. People who be more patient will get the greater rewards. In life you have to think, consider all options before making a decision to insure that the…

The red knot (Calidris canutus) or the rufa red knot (Calidris canutus rufa) is a medium sized shorebird, the second largest sandpiper (Calidris), measuring between 25 and 28 cm long with a wingspan of approximately 20 inches (United State Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), n.d.). (See Figure 1). The species has been known to travel great distances; breeding in the Arctic regions of Canada and migrating south in the winter months to the coastal mudflats and tidal zones (USFWS, n.d.). Every spring the red knot reaches the beaches of Delaware Bay with very little body fat and for three short weeks forages on the highly nutritious eggs of horseshoe crabs before they continue migrating north to the Artic (Karpanty, et al., 2006). (See Figure 2). This…

What Gabler fails to do is define entertainment. What may be considered entertaining for Taylor Swift may have been considered boring by Albert Einstein. And what may be fun for Nicki Minaj may have been considered a waste of time by Gregor Mendel. Different people seek different forms of entertainment, although throughout any form, as with anything in life, there is an upside and a downside. Music can be relaxing and soothing; but play it too loud and it harms your hearing. Watch the History channel and learn a thing or two, or watch Jersey Shore and become influenced by their outlandish behavior.…

Multitasking Hurts Performances but Makes You Feel Better, the title says it all. The authors’ main reason for this article is to share the truth about multitasking with the public. The article talks about studies taken on individual students over a period of time and their urge for multitasking. The students who multitasked seem to think that when they are studying and listening to music, watching television, texting, or on the internet that it makes them more productive. In reality the students are only obtaining an emotional boost from doing so. The author argues that when juggling too many tasks that you will perform poorly so you should refrain from doing so. They also claim that if you are a victim of multitasking now, you will most likely continue this trend and make it a habit. “It is critical that we carefully examine the long-term influence of media multitasking on how we perform on cognitive tasks.”…

Anthony Robbins once said “It’s in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.” People make so many quick decisions unconsciously, whereas other decisions are lamented over. Society makes choices and creates opinions through deep mental thought which is influenced by preference, logic, feelings, and reflection. Some people may even question whether free will is a believable concept. Others believe it is all within our own power to make decisions that will lead to greater happiness. Little decisions lead to big consequences because when small and simple decisions are made, big decisions are to come, choices indicate character, and every decision made impacts other decisions.…

Mischel’s Marshmallow Study on willpower of children was insightful and had a strong message to convey on the human response to temptations. Not everyone has strong willpower and those who do have a tendency to excel more than most. Self-control helps with happiness because any guilty feelings one may have due to giving into the lure of one’s obsessions is squashed and therefore no longer an attraction. An individual should listen to Mischel’s study to understand there is willpower that begins from a very young age and it is rather enjoyable to listen to or learn…

Many discoveries have shown that coupling a task with a reward increases the overall motivation of an individual. When external rewards are given for an activity that is initially intrinsically motivated, an individual shifts focus to the external source, leading him or her to become a pawn to the source of external rewards. The behavior of the individual is then motivated by the external reward, and as a result, intrinsic motivation decreases (Deci 1971). Deci (1971) found that money may act as a stimulus that leads participants to reevaluate an activity that is originally intrinsic in nature to one which is primarily motivated by external rewards.…

An incentive is an external stimulus that competes with the primary drive to sleep (Burton, et al.). If the individual deems the incentive to be more enticing than the primary drive to sleep, then sleep will be avoided leading to sleep deprivation. This phenomena would be studied experimentally by manipulating the use of incentives to compete with the motivation for sleep. The biological variable, hours of sleep would be measured by direct observation and the use of a video camera. The theoretical variable, presence of an incentive would be measured by an incentive schedule. It is hypothesised that a negative correlation would be found between incentives and hours of…

Behaviourists believe the environment controls behaviour, and that humans adapt to the environment and life experiences they encounter. How individuals learn is said to be through experience, developing skills and abilities are as a direct result of the learning experiences encountered. Skinner (1974) argued that learning is caused by the consequences of our actions. This means that people learn to associate actions with the pleasure or discomfort that follows. Skinner believed that learning could be explained using the idea of reinforcement which is referred to as ‘operant conditioning’. This is anything that can make behaviour stronger. Skinners work is used still today in many classroom settings. Students are motivated to complete a task by being promised a reward of some kind. Many times the reward takes the form of praise or a grade. Sometimes it is a token that can be traded in for some desired object; and at other times the reward may be the privilege of engaging in a self-selected activity. However, there are some limitations of using this approach as the overuse and misuse of techniques have been argued by Kohn (1993). Most of the criticisms of the use of reinforcement as a motivational incentive stem from the fact that it represents ‘extrinsic motivation’. That is a learner decides to engage in an activity to earn a reward that is not inherently related to the activity. Kohn suggest that this approach has potentially three dangers:…

There has never been and will never be a serious debate over who the second greatest athlete of all time is. This is because in society second place is not good enough it represents someone who did not win and no one idolizes a loser. A loser is lost in the shuffle and will never be remembered by the average sports fan. For this and many other reasons athletes will do just about anything in their power to be considered a winner, even if that means cheating. Cheating is displayed in every sport on every level and is performed by an athlete in an attempt to gain an advantage over the competition and ultimately win. Cheating comes in many shapes and sizes and can be as harmless as changing a score card in golf to as serious as ending your life for an upper hand on the playing field.…
