221. Security Analysis & Portfolio Management

Overview
This course is designed to improve the students’ understanding of the fundamental concepts of security investments. The emphasis of the course is on developing skills for portfolio management. The course is fairly quantitative and the students should be familiar with the basic concepts of probability and statistics and be comfortable using spreadsheet packages like Excel. This course is taught from the viewpoint of a user of financial market. Moreover, The topics in fixed income securities and valuation are also discussed in this course.

Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to acquaint the student with the tools essential for sound money management. .Using a blend of academic- and practitioner-oriented readings, case studies, and group analytical sessions, managers will be introduced to both the conventional wisdom and state-of-the-art methods used in performing many of the Fund's functional tasks, including security research, security trading, economic forecasting, and organizational coordination. After establishing a background in the technical aspects of managing a security portfolio, we will focus on developing a solid intuition about what an investment professional in each of these positions must know to do his or her job well.

Course format:
The course is based on experiential learning through case discussion, group dynamics and action team learning in the class sessions supplemented with readings.
There may be surprise quiz on pre-class/pre-groupwork preparation. The students are required to work in-groups in preparing the cases and the project. Before coming to the group work, all participants should read the relevant chapters and reading materials followed by the case ;

Therefore, it important to develop and implement investment strategies in order to gain the most on a portfolio – be it as a mutual fund manager or an individual planning for retirement. Tools such as Stock-Trak, an online portfolio simulation, allow students to gain hands on experience testing different investment strategies in a risk-free, yet realistic environment.
