Terrorism in Nortehern Ireland
Ever since I started college I knew I was going to be doing countless hours of research and writing essays by the boatload. While doing this assignment I have learned quite a while. How charming a criminal can be to the point where his own victim marries him. How creative people can get when seeking revenge or better yet, how an 11 year old boy can kill another being out of boredom just because he wanted to know how it felt. And as gruesome and all this knowledge might be is all true and pretty simple to understand thanks to the master minds who post it on the internet. Some of these people include journalist, historian’s professors and other fellow students. It wasn’t till I had to write this paper that all of that went out the window.

I decided I wanted a challenge but this time I out did my self. The purpose of this essay was to talk about terrorism in a certain place in the world. I chose Northern Ireland since I know nothing about it other than there is Irish people and that they celebrate my favorite holiday after my birthday and Christmas which is St. Patrick’s. Then I thought there has to be more than red heads and leprechauns to this place. As I started my research I was automatically confused. I found my self reading between the lines of a war kind of like a West Side Story but a lot more serious.

A war that to me made no sense what so ever. The words of the computer monitor rushed through my eyes. I found that just like in the movie there are two sides to the story or two groups. Instead of gangs like the SHARKS and the JETS it was the Catholics and the Protestants that caused the chaos. My confusion and stress level grew higher and higher because what I understood was senseless. Theses people were fighting over religion land & laws for about 30 years. Could this really be? Can the one thing that makes you an individual be the same reason that can take your freedom rights and even your very life away?

The two groups regardless of being

Jenkins starts his article using an analogy to emphasize society’s strong feelings between kiddie porn, Timothy McVeigh, and snuff films to get readers on his side; everyone hates McVeigh for the Oklahoma City bombing and many people hate snuff films. Therefore, Jenkins figures that if he uses examples of instances where people have strong opinions of McVeigh and snuff films in the beginning of his article, then he will be able to persuade readers throughout the rest of his writing to believe his examples he gives for his thesis.…

In the article, “On Punishment and Teen Killers”, Jennifer Jenkins claims that people feel bad for the teens that are getting life sentences for murdering someone, but there is no regard for the victims’ families. This article has the weakest ethos out of all of them. The author first develops her credibility when she quotes an expert named James Q. Wilson, Harvard Professor, and Crime Expert. This technique builds her credibility because her research is now coming from an expert, and this makes the readers trust her claim. Jenkins strengthens her credibility when she says, “As a high school teacher, I have worked lovingly with teens all my life…”(4). This example makes the readers feel like the author knows how teens work since she is a high…

By 1932, crop prices had dropped per bushel to corn, three cents; oats, six cents; barley, ten cents; and wheat, sixteen cents (terkel-a0a0o8-a.mp3). Farmers thought that if supply could be stopped then the prices would be driven up, leading to the farm holiday movement (terkel-a0a0o4-a.mp3). Men would stop other farmers on highways and destroy produce in an attempt to stop the farm economy (terkel-a0a0o4-a.mp3). In one case, a railroad bridge was burned to stop produce from going to market (terkel-a0a0o5-a.mp3). These acts can be looked at as a form of domestic terrorism. The farmers had been pushed beyond the point of desperation to the point of radicalism. One story, told by former South Dakota Senator Emil Loriks, claims that when a man…

Terrorism is not unique to contemporary society, the term ‘terrorism’ and ‘terrorist’ date back to the late 18th Century (Laqueur 1987 as cited in Newburn 2007, p. 871). Defining the word ‘terrorism’ is a difficult task; Walter Laqueur is said to have counted over 100 definitions of terrorism and he concluded that the only general characteristics that are most often agreed upon are that terrorism involves violence and the threat of violence (Laqueur, 1999 as cited in Furedi 2007). Although these are not new terms to society, it is important to analyse any changes in the representation, of the words ‘terrorism’ and ‘terrorist’ since the events on 9/11. The perceptions that individuals in society have and…

The fraud in the story "Skinwalkers" was committed for the sole purpose of getting back at the American government. The reasoning behind the fraud was because a treaty that was signed at Fort Summer decades ago. This treaty promised things to the Indian people things, which were never delivered, such as one teacher for every thirty residents. Basically Dr. Yellowhorse was now making the government reimburse the hospital for the bills of people who had already been released and even for people who were already deceased. The reason this was done so easily was because there were no death certificates for the deceased and many people that were dead had no date of death along with there name. The cases where Dr. Yellowhorse easily covered up people that were still living because he worked in the hospital and had access to the financial data. This meant it was almost effortless for him to file faulty reports as often as possible.…

Terrorism has changed and developed across the world over time, much like the world has changed and developed over time. Advancements in technology, communications, military and transportation have also aided in the advancement of terrorist ability. Most countries, as well as the people residing in them, have dramatically advanced their capabilities in all areas, including terrorism, with each passing decade. The phrase ‘terrorism’ was originally coined in the late 1700s in reference to European governments attempting to gain a stronghold over the people and initiate their ideas (Roberts, 2002). However, this began to change in the late 1800s when non-governmental organizations began developing with a mission to overthrow their unsatisfactory…

Terrorism and counterterrorism are reasonably accredited areas to study because of all of the terrorism in the world (Roberts 2014). Terrorism can be examined from many different perspectives. To build on that point terrorism can be studied from a sociological perspective. Turk (2004) argues that sociology is a social construction. When society labels certain events as terrorism the government will begin to apply these labels (Turk 2004). If a powerful government, like the United States of America, starts to use labels like ‘terrorism’ or ‘terrorist,’ the it will have more influence on society to use these words; however, as a juxtaposition, if a less powerful government, like Luxembourg, labels people as terrorists then it will not have as…
