Summarize the key points made in the Seminar:
In 2007 Terry Pratchett announced that he was suffering from a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease known as PCA. “Before you kill a monster, you have to be prepared to say its name.”
He does not seek to minimize a cancer patient’s journey. This can be supported by his decision to donate 1 million dollars to fund research in 2007.
He believes that choice is important in the matter, therefore he would like a non-aggressive tribunal. “My life, my death, my choice”.
No evidence to suggest it leads to any type of slippery abuse. This can be seen by the current system in Oregon. “Why should it be any different here?
Summarize the subsidiary points made in the Seminar:
Father died of pancreatic cancer, told him: “ If you ever see me in a hospital bed, full of tubes and pipes and no good to anyone, tell them to switch me off.” – Pratchett has said that if the nurses had put the relevant syringe in his father, he would have felt like it was his duty to press it.
When he first received his diagnosis he felt alone. They were no specialists in his area. There was no one who would see someone with the early onset of Alzheimer’s and initially no one to write a prescription for him.
British Social Attitude survey found: 71% of religious people and 92% of non-religious people were in favour of medically assisting the death of people with incurable illnesses if they request it.
