Introduction
Ladies and gentlemen!
Welcome. I would like to thank all of you, for attending to this conference. As many of you may know, I am Sir Terry Leahy. I am the CEO of Tesco, the third largest retail company in the world. We are gathered here today to talk about the future and the increasing growth in retail businesses. Many years of experience and research in Tesco has given us an insight of the retail markets and consumer habits, and therefore we would like to share our point of view in the retail market. Our agenda for today is as following: I will be developing three main points. In the first part, I will talk about the development of retailing. Secondly we will talk about the green consumerism. Finally I will discuss consumer’s future shopping habits. At last I will answer any questions regarding any particular subject.
Development of retailing
Our access to retail stores has not always been quick and easy. People tend to forget that it has not always been like this. The development of large retail outlets has increased enormously for the last decade. Before Tesco, retailing was only a post-war experiment, which never managed to succeed, and they had an inability to show the masses what they stood for. The local retail shops could be convenient, but quite expensive. Most of people’s disposable income went on food shopping. And with the already low disposable income back then, this became a major concern for the consumers. Back in the days, people used to spend several hours on shopping, because of the local shops inability to provide products for all of the customers needs and demands. . But today shopping is a lot easier. Today we have many possibilities for shopping, with almost an endless range of various products to reasonable prices. And therefore, the retailing market has seen a tremendous growth in the last decade. An example to this, is Tesco. Tesco has reached great success, and has become the third largest
