Edison was born on February 11th, 1847 in Milan, Ohio, and was homeschooled by his mother after being taken out of school. Because Edison had easy access to the nearest rail yard, he used an empty car to conduct experiments in. He learned Morse Code before he turned 16 and was able to leave his hometown and work as a telegrapher for 5 years. During his time wandering, Edison was able to experiment with Telegraph machines and learn much about electrical science. In 1868, Edison returned to his hometown and found a mentally ailing mother and an out-of-work father. Seeing this Edison turns to New York and moves there in 1869. Upon getting to New York, Edison invents a stock ticker device that earns him $40,000. Using this money, Edison sets up a laboratory and begins to work on his inventions full-time (Thomas Edison). While Edison had a very liberal and free childhood and young adulthood, Tesla had a structured upbringing. Born on July 10th, 1856 in what is now Smiljan, Croatia, Tesla had a mother who invented small appliances. It is from her that his passion started and soon he had studied at Realshule, Karlstadt; the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria; and the University of Prague.
