The passage under analysis is from the story by Jerome K. Jerome “Three men in the boat”. He is a well-known English writer and humorist, whose vivid writing style won a lot of people’s hearts.
The scene is laid in one of the Shiplake island where three men with a dog decided to stay for a night. After they got settled, at George’s suggestion they set about making an “Irish stew” out of all the ingredients and odds and ends they had. As a result, they prepared a dish with a new flavor, with a taste like nothing else on earth, without a water rat, which Montmorency, their dog, presented them as his contribution to the dinner.
The passage presents a piece of narration which can be split into two parts. The first part is written in lyrical key. We have a description of the picturesque village of Sonning, and how three men are looking for a place to stay. We can prove it because the author used a lot of lexical and stylistic devices, which make the passage more colourful, and they help us to understand what the author wanted to show. For example, in the passage we can see some bookish words and word combinations as “smothered in” and “splendor” . And by metaphors and epithets the description of the village is presented to us, also, in a lyrical key. For example: “fairy-like nook”, “winding passages” and “quaint rooms”.
The second part is written in a humorous key. In this passage the author tells us about making an Irish stew and final result of men’s cooking. The author achieved the humorous effect by using the humour of words. Also there are a lot of irons, for example: “ half-smothered”, “wished to present as his contribution to the dinner” and exaggerations. For example: “ The job turned out to be the biggest thing of its kind that I had ever in.” Additionally, the author is used a contrast for showing the difference between two or more entities. For example: “rich, but nutritious”.
To sum up, I should say that the author
