Textual Analysis: The Sailor's Delight
The Sailor’s Delight was a dreary, dismal and seedy bar on the edge of downtown Galveston and close to The Strand, a collection of small tourist shops, good and bad restaurants, and shops for Aunt Milly and Uncle Bob. Close to Broadway are several old and historic wooden houses that are over priced and recently remodeled, and all are painted in pastel shades with chalk white trim. Filippo owned a rather large house on a comer, and it is unique for it has a couple of large trees, and they are the only trees on the block The house was recently painted a pale orange, the choice of Filippo’s current flame because she liked the way it complimented her natural auburn hair.
The Sailor’s Delight was almost without color except for the displays of advertisements

Anything else?”

“You did good, very good, so how about his companion?”

There was a long moment before Picca found the appropriate words and they were, “He is a degenerate and is evil in any sense of the word. He is also an enigma, but following the same pattern I would say that the smaller guy looks Sicilian but he isn’t. He is dark and shiny slick but he has culture and he has had an excellent and proper education. I tell you, Filippo, this one is weird and as I said before, he is an enigma. He is solidly built and has the muscles to prove it. He has thick black hair but at first glance you think he is becoming bald and he is pasting his hair down so it looks like he has more hair. He still looks Sicilian but I’ll say he is a Jew, an Eastern European Jew. He could be a Hungarian. But, forget about most of what I said and concentrate on his eyes. They are void of personality, common sense or decency. They are neither fish nor fowl, male or female and that is what really bothers me. He will never be happy. So what are they up to in this joint?”
Filippo’s answer was concise. “Wait and

Four champagne glasses, and the check, please.”
Filippo looks at Picca, smiles and says, “We are going to get up and head for the door. I will leave plenty of money on the table. I’ll put my right hand on your shoulder and squeeze. When I do that you’ll put your head on my shoulder and

smile. All eyes will be on us and remember that you are my baby.”

Picca was excited and not because his head was resting on Filippo’s shoulder, but because he knew that this was a bad scene that could only get worse. He was also frightened. So when ever in doubt do something out of character, and that is what he decided to do. And in a falsetto voice he said, “I love you truly, truly dear, let’s continue the party but without the beer. It is time for Guidos so guide me there, lover, guide me there.”
When they were outside Filippo whacked him hard on the side of the head and told him to behave himself. They jumped into Filippo’s Cadillac and before Picca could ask any questions of meaning they were in Guidos, the best restaurant in Galveston and maybe the best seafood restaurant in Texas.

This scene is very touching as the two characters drink wine and snack on mozzarella. "Let's forget everything, let's get drunk," says Antonio to his son. "We'll eat and be happy for now." Through the food, drinks, and cheerful songs, the two try to forget their problems of the day. This is a scene that everyone can relate to; when you are having a bad day or a bad time in your life, you want to go out and just forget, even if it's for a moment. Bruno keeps looking self consciously at a rich young boy dressed in black who sits near by. This young boy returns his glances with a snotty look. "Eat, eat, don't worry," Antonio says to his son. This scene demonstrates that even in childhood, it is hard to escape from the current conditions. As we saw in the earlier scenes, Bruno is responsible for many things at a very young age. He helps his father clean his bike, closes the window for the baby, and remembers to say goodbye to his mother. Bruno is a character of the middle class. He is not as hopeless as the two children panhandling on the street; one who receives a swift kick from Antonio's fellow employee. However Bruno is not as well off as the young boy at the restaurant. He is stuck in the middle, which is very frustrating because slipping into poverty seems so easy to do while becoming well off seems so far…

In the opening of the chapter, the main character Vittorio describes the story that the book is written about. It has a beginning that occurred on a hot July day in the year 1960 in Vittorio's home town of Valle de Sole, when his mother, Christina got bit by a snake. Vittorio describes his city as to have no holy places, ancient cites or ruins; forgotten and unsung, just like hundreds of villages spread throughout Italy. Vittorio describes how his father immigrated to America almost four years ago when Vittorio was barely three years old. His grandfather was left crippled from the war when a horse crushed his foot and he was injured by a grenade. That day, his mother slipped out of the house making him promise that he would read his school books. Vittorio's attendance at school was not very regular because he would spend much of class time wondering to the top of Colle di Papa or down the river with his friend Fabrizio and sharing cigarettes that Fabrizio had stole from his father. Vittorio was sitting on his porch reading math books when he dose off. He was awakened by a muffled shout coming from the stable. Vittorio ran to the stable and stopped short at the bottom of the steps and peeked through the crack in the door. Inside he saw a green snake which slipped through the cracks of the stable and into the tomato garden. While Vittorio was watching the snake, the barn door opened, and a man with blue eyes swooped out of the stable. After Vittorio went inside the stable, he saw his mother pouring water into the pigs' trough as though nothing has happened. Vittorio tells his mother that he heard a man screm and when she asked him what he saw, Vittorio replied that he didnt see anything. He then told her that she has blood on her ankle. In the conclusion of the chapter, Christina tells Vittorio to run up to Di Lucci's and tell him to bring a car because she had been bitten by a snake.…

The article details how well the young man was dressed and what a strong impression he gave before he broke down. It explains why it came off as such a shock to the author. At the Gym, written by Mark Doty; has no relation with being at the gym at all; metaphorically speaking it pertains to attending church. The narrative provided is from the author's observation of other people in the church. The primary metaphor of this poem is religiously based in the sense people have determination to release their burdens with the desire of overcoming tribulations through prayer. Many smaller metaphors inside the poem leading the reader to believe there is faith veiled throughout. This metaphor is explained in this essay by many other small metaphors; Salt-stain is really tears, the vinyl is from the pews/benches in the church. How this metaphor references something manmade, the association of grief emotions in this poem such as hopelessness and despair. While more positive emotions of relief and hope are set forth; leading one to happiness. Many hidden religious aspects contained throughout the poem are brought to light.…

Vittorio is also starting to feel isolated from everyone at school “I was alone now, without friends, and it quickly became clear what my status was with the other boys … I was merely shunned, and could not make out with the insults which they whispered to each other in class …” (pg. 107) This shows that Cristina is not only causing problems for herself and the grandfather but also for her son. Vittorio feels alone, due to his mother’s actions Vittorio gets abused physically and mentally by his peers. She ruined what little relationship he had with the other boys at school. “It’s that woman’s fault, all of this, she thinks she’s free as a bird, she doesn’t think about other people. Who did this to you?” This quote proves that the reason for Vittorio getting beat up is his mother’s fault.…
