Thank You, Ma 'Am' By Langston Hughes
Student Initials: BCW J21 “Thank You, Ma’am” - Langston Hughes In the short story “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, there’s a young boy who seems to be about 14 or 15, and a woman whose age is not revealed. The boy tries to snatch the lady’s purse and the lady catches him and takes him home with her. She teaches him some life lessons and changes him as a person. “Thank You, Ma’am” uses dialogue to describe a time period and two personalities and how they change over a short period of time. Actions by the lady cause the boy to think and change himself. The boy’s decisions change his thoughts which shape him. The woman in this story acts very demanding and superior towards this boy which cause him
to change. For example she kicks him as soon as he falls back and then picks him up and shakes him. The kid is then frightened and is turned into a servant for her. In that period of time of holding him up, he has thought about his decision and reflected upon it. The lady’s actions are crucial to the boy and his mindset in the future. The boy has changed since he tried to steal the pocketbook, because of the woman. The boy is give many decisions over the time that he is with the woman. She starts to trust that he won’t leave, but he still can. His decision to be honest with her once she picked him up could be why she trusted him. The boy is changed for the future once he meets the woman. Part of that is because of her actions, but the boy also plays a large part in the role of changing himself. His decision to be honest why he would take the purse, eventually gets him the ten dollars that he needed.
During “Thank You, Ma’am”, a boy is changed after meeting a stranger. The story used dialogue to describe the personalities and go into depth on how they were changing.The lady trusted the boy towards the end of the short story. Which led to his decision to stay in the house. The boy has many important decisions that go through his head during his period at the house, and he chooses the right decisions and is ultimately rewarded.
