Nicki Minaj says to Ask for What You're Worth
According to Black Enterprise, Nicki Minaj grew up wanting to be her own boss. "As a child, my mother didn’t have a job where she was the boss,” she said “And I always looked at that and wished she was the boss and did make her own rules. So from very early on, I felt like ‘You know what? Whatever I do, one day I want to be more in charge of my business.’”
It's hard to argue that she did not do exactly that, especially given her newly acquired place on Time's list of "The 100 Most Influential People". She is also the only female to earn her way onto Forbe's 2015 "Hip Hop Cash Kings" list having brought in over $21 million.
Minaj recalls that when she was starting out she was never shy about
asking for the money she felt she deserved. Even in the beginning, she knew she was offering the same service as other rappers and she believed her music and shows were every bit as good so she should be equally compensated.
“At a very early stage in my rap career, I was making six figures for shows. If I heard there was another rapper making that, I thought, ‘You know what? I get out there and demand or command a crowd. I get out there and make my fans happy. I get out there and give a real show. I want that, too.’ And I pushed myself to be better with my showmanship, but I also decided, you know what? I want to be compensated well.”
Minaj believes all women should do what she did. She says that too many women are afraid to ask for what they are truly worth. “If you know you’re great at what you do, don’t ever be ashamed to ask for the top dollar in your field,” she says.
