Western Europe and specifically France had continuities and changes that occurred in the political and social structures over the time period of 1600 to 1850.…
The 1910s and 1920s were two important decades consisting of many significant events from World War One to Canada gaining its independence. For my radio segments, I chose to talk about the Battle of Ypres and sinking of the Lusitania. Firstly, I chose to report about the second battle that occurred at Ypres, Belgium in 1915 because it was one of first times that Canadians fought Europeans and fought well no matter the circumstances. In the 1910s, people valued bravery immensely because it was a sign of masculinity and virility. Men used to sign up for the war solely to not feel left out or inferior in terms of fortitude. In the Battle of Ypres, Canadian troops counterattacked the Germans to close the gap created by the poison gas and the soldiers held the line long enough for…
Toxic metals such as lead in tableware, copper found in pans or zinc from galvanized kitchen items can make its way into food and cause toxic metal poisoning…
Doménico Cieri Estrada once said, “Bring the past only if you are to going to build from it.” The 1920s and 1990s are largely spread apart, as are the cultural values of the people who grew up in that time period. The influences of growing up in different times can surely influence the way people act and respond to difficulties and debates outside of themselves. But the difference in time periods encourages growth and build upon each other, making similarities and differences easy to define. Technological advances in the 1920s and 1990s can be viewed as being similar by the useful inventions that were released that people continue to use in the present.…
Compare and contrast economic, social, and political developments in the North and South between 1800-1860. How do you account for the divergence between the two sections?…
Progressivism Between 1870 and 1920 a population shift occurred from rural to urban. Early immigrants and new immigrants differed greatly in many areas. Urbanization lead to changes in technology such as transportation, water power, steam power, and machinery. Though city dwellers received technology first, this technology allowed for people to live outside the city and still work there. The industry was dominated by large companies, who supplied work.…
When you think about what has changed between now and the 1800’s there are endless possibilities to mention. Most of the time however these changes have been for the better. When you come across something that hasn’t changed much one can’t help but wonder why. The similarities between institutionalism now and in the 1800’s are eerily similar. “In the 1830’s jail was an all purpose solution for a lot of issues” (Campbell, 2014). Intentional or not I still feel like this is still the case. The people in prison who are confined in solitary either have mental issues, which caused them to end up in solitary confinement, or they made a bad decision causing them to end up in solitary. Whatever the primary mental state of the prisoner, the majority…
A decade may sound like a short time, but in reality, many things could happen in just that one decade. One decade can totally change what happens and make a 180 degree turn of what was happening. In the 1920s, World War 1 has just ended and soldiers were coming back from many casualties. From America being stuck in war, they were finally able to celebrate. A dramatic change had begun and the cultural structure had completely changed. A great economic growth was able to happen because of consumer goods, and this swept up America into a completely different society. From being reserved and rural, people became urbanized. Throughout the 1920s, cultural factors like the Jazz Age, Flappers, and the jazz music was what made Americans flourish and…
The 1920’s are often referred to as the roaring twenties. It was the time of economic prosperity and technological advances. More and more Americans were relocating into cities instead of rural areas. The wealth of the nation nearly doubled resulting in America becoming a consumer society (Mintz & McNeil). Spending was at an all time high; Americans spent their money on new items including electric refrigerators and radios. One of the most notable consumer products sold during this time was the automobile (History.com).…
President Quincy Adam’s term was over and the election leading to Andrew Jackson’s presidency was heavy with political parties. Quincy Adams served as a diplomat, a senator, and was in the House of Representatives. Andrew Jackson was in the Congress, a senator, a national hero when his forces defeated the Creek and Seminole Indians, and fought in New Orleans during the War of 1812, and was a lawyer. Andrew Jackson believed in a strong presidency and a strong Union. The supporters of Andrew Jackson arose to become the modern Democratic Party. The supporters who backed up Quincy Adams began calling themselves the National Republicans.…
The world has evolved very much since the beginning of time. For the world to be known and to go on like it has been there had to be a starting point; where everything had changed and improved. The economic, social, political, cultural dynamic has changed since the beginning of time. The world has become interconnected into a web in the period between the1500s and the 1800s. There has been an extreme changed in the cultural, economic, and social dynamics throughout the 1500s to the 1800s time period.…
The Jacksonian Era was surely a new sight to see. Andrew Jackson was president, and was making some odd decisions. Yet, through the Federal Bank Crisis, the Spoil System, and many others, the good shined through. The Common People’s Rights (or just white men) took a step forward. Also events, some good, some bad, such as the Westward Expansion or Texas Independence took place. Through the early 1800’s, writers like Longsfellow, art like the Hudson River School, and lyricists like Samuel Smith presented not only their perspective on the issues going on at the time, but also demonstrate it through art that people could enjoy for years to come.…
As a period of wealth and prosperity, the Roaring Twenties represented a few of the main cultural and economical changes throughout America. This age received its name from the exuberant era ranging from 1918 to 1929. The second half of the decade became known as the “Golden Twenties.” Typified by roaring automobiles, industrial factories, jazz music, and loud crowded streets, the Roaring Twenties reflected an epoch of exorbitant revelry. The economy thrived and society gradually became more accepting of other cultures and influences. Although this time period expressed progress towards modern society, many did not approve of the adjustment. From this, the Ku Klux Klan, or the KKK, sprouted as well as the “cultural civil war.” The economical,…
Men vs. Women “Roles of men and women now vs back then.” How things used to be. Things have changed so much from the 1800’s to the times we are living in now. When you ask someone about this time period they will immediately tell you home much thing have changed especially between women. Nowadays we see women doing things that would be seen as bad, or as weakness from men.…
America had the most media, the cheapest media, and the freest media by the 1840’s. Communication through the media was vital to America in the early 1800’s because, as a democratic nation, the people needed to be well informed about their system of government. Following the American Revolution, the United States stayed from their traditional English ideas involving the relationship between the state and the people. Unlike Great Britain’s selective press and seditious libel laws, information and communication regarding government issues was necessary for democracy to thrive. Key factors that contributed to the growth of American media were the role of the post office, cheap print, growing literacy, and the First Amendment.…
