Poison, a substance when introduced can cause injury or even death. In the tragedy of hamlet by William Shakespeare the motif of poison frequently occurs in the play, both physically and metaphorically. Each type and way used links to a different situation in the play. The theme of poison is directly linked to death, disease and decay. Poison is embedded deep within the well-known plot of the play.
The first reach of poison in the play is shown when Claudius poisons king hamlet in the garden. "Sleeping within my orchard, my custom always of the afternoon, upon my secure hour thy uncle stole, with juice of cursed hobo a in a vial, and in such an enmity
with blood of man that swift as quicksilver it courses through the natural gates and alleys of the body." ( I.V. 66-75) The quote explains the section of where the murder took place. It happens in the kings garden where he goes everyday for his daily nap. During his nap, his brother Claudius pours poison in the king's ear. The connection to he argument is to show where the poison is first shown in the play . The setting helps to layout the plot development. This idea of poison is shown both physically and metaphorically. King hamlet immediately died however this act was a beginning to an infection ready to spread throughout the land of Denmark. The action of poison being poured is related to the idea of gossip.
Metaphorically, Claudius plays a major part in poisoning. Claudius poisons people's minds. He poisons the minds of Gertrude, Laertes, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern.
Claudius soon after the arrival of Hamlet, invites two of ham let's friends from college. It was believed that his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern came to Denmark for support and to be a good friend. Hamlet says, "this most excellent canopy, the air . . . this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours" (2.2.299-303). After the arrival Hamlet discovers that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have come to see him because they were sent for by the King, not because they are his friends.
After the death of king hamlet, queen Gertrude marries Claudius without hesitation. It could be said that Claudius poisoned Gertrude's mind to help himself in the desire for more power. " O wicked wit, and gifts that have the power So to seduce! - won to his shameful lust The will of the most seeming- virtuous queen" ( I.v. 44-46) Claudius tries to convince her that he is good and to marry him for the love and lust that they share. Claudius used love to poison her mind into doing wrong things for the wrong reasons.
Hamlet eventually winds up killing Polonius, father of his girlfriend Ophilea and Laertes. Polonius was king Claudius's helper in the destruction of Denmark.
Once hamlet arrives home from college, he knows off the back something is wrong. "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (1.4.90) Marcellus says this after he has seen Hamlet follow the Ghost into the dark.Hamlet doesn't find the truth out until he is confronted by the ghost of king hamlet.
