She receives care and assistance in her home, she has a cleaner who comes in to clean once a week, a neighbour who makes her dinner (Gladys pays for it) and a granddaughter who is her advocate. She has mobility difficulties but can walk short distances with a trolley/Zimmer frame. She spent 5 weeks in the hospital receiving treatment for a urinary tract infection (UTI) and was appointed a care manager after her discharge. Gladys has over £25,000 and receives £600 as pensions monthly.…
From these chapter I have gain the knowledge of know, the delivery of health traditionally evolved around the individual relationship between the provider and patient/consumer. The payment was either provided by a health insurance company or paid out of pocket by the consumer. This fee-for-service system or indemnity plan increased the cost of healthcare because there were no controls on how much to charge for the providers service. As healthcare costs continued to spiral out of control throughout the decades, more experiments with contract practice and prepaid service occurred randomly across the U.S. healthcare system (Shi & Singh, 2008)…
In 2013 the states were given the opportunity to expand on Medicaid under the affordable care act. With this expansion the government would pay a 100 percent for the first three years and reduce down to 90 percent over ten years. Many of the southern states chose not to expand and went on to search for private insurance companies to help cover the cost they would be losing in the future years. These states include Texas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Two state that are undecided is Tennessee and Indiana. Texas was all for making sure people were insured in health and wellness but they had their own idea of covering them.…
This assignment is to discuss the major provisions of the Massachusetts health care reform laws of 2006. In April there were about fifty eight which were put in to the law. By putting these into effect they made a stand for the health care reform. It was then that Massachusetts could provide affordable health insurance for its residents. When the legislation met they came to a compromise in which it was reached by the then Governor Mitt Romney who was a republican, and was also joined by Robert Travaglini and Salvatore Dimasi. It was discussed and believed that everyone in the state should have health insurance, but they were in hopes that it would be affordable. They finally decided to make insurance affordable as long as they could use…

For the past several years, the health care and insurance industries in America have been undergoing significant reform in order to rein in the high cost of delivering health care services. Managed care has become a cornerstone of this process (Strickland, 1995). The case management industry (with its focus on cost containment, managed competition, and quality care) is playing an increasingly important role in the managed care environment (Owens, 1996). According to Mullahy (1995a), the number of case managers has risen astronomically in recent years. These individuals come from diverse professional backgrounds and practice settings that include nursing, rehabilitation counseling, and social work.…
Medicaid and Medicare have been around for more than 50 years, when President Johnson signed them into effect. Medicare helps people 65 or older, younger people with disabilities and people with end stage renal disease. Medicaid is a federal-state health insurance for people with low income or disabled. These programs have helped several people pay for hospital bills/visits. The Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare was first put into effect in 2010, by President Obama. Its promise was to expand coverage and make insurance available to Americans who have not been able to receive insurance. There has been a great debate since it first went into effect, whether it was a good decision or bad. In this paper I will evaluate the pros and cons,…
Throughout American history congress has had to resolve problems that arose nation wide. Pell Grants, created in 1972, and the Affordable Care Act of 2010 are just two of the legislations created to solve some of the United States economic problems. Although these two solutions were both initiated to boost America’s economy and to support low income families, the reason for the intervention of the government and their results differ.…
In the United States there are nearly 12 million undocumented immigrants that are denied affordable access to healthcare (Rosen, 2012). In 2010 President Barack Obama signed into law The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) with the intention to expand economical healthcare to the millions of uninsured residents across the United States. However, this law excludes undocumented immigrants from receiving health insurance from the Marketplace, Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) (D’Emilia & Suplee, 2012). The exclusion from the Marketplace, Medicaid and CHIP for undocumented immigrants furthers the gap of accessible healthcare as they are ineligible for governmental aid even though the foreign-born population has higher rates of poverty, lower education levels, and lower rates of health care coverage compared to U.S. born residents (Edward,…
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly called the Affordable Care Act or colloquially Obamacare, is a United States federal statute signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. Together with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act amendment, it represents the most significant regulatory overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.…
The policy to be analysis is The Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) that was implemented in 2010. The Affordable Care Act is a very comprehensive and now complexed health care system that is being changed. Over centuries there has been many reforms, discussions and controversies surrounding the debate over affordable health care for Americans and their families. And Obama Care is proposed to be what Americans can benefit from and afford. However, there is a downside to this insurance. The individual or family will get the medical help they need but, they still have to pay a co-payment monthly even if they are not sick. With that being said, there is a loss for insurance companies as well. If a person have a pre-existing condition, the…

It has been asked if healthcare is a right or privilege, with the Affordable Care Act, coming into play it would appear to be no choice in the matter. Everyone will have to have some type of insurance coverage or pay a penalty. Congress is having a hard time trying to decide how to fund on this bill. Will the bill help or hurt America? Some issues I see are how will it hurt the small business owner, will some Americans lose full time job status so that the business owner does not have to pay more and how much will the cost of insurance affect one’s income and family spending. This paper will discuss what the Affordable Care Act and how it affects millions of Americans. This paper will also discuss problems that the Affordable Care Act faces, the history of the Affordable Care act and how has the ACA been effective in address the issues it faces.…
