The use of stereotyping gender roles of black men and women are a primary indicator of the African American voice. Many white organizations opposed racial equality towards African Americans, which came from a series of levels. As mentioned in We Shall Overcome The Players, “It occurred at all levels of government and society--from federal judges to state governors to county sheriffs to local citizens serving on juries” (The Players 1). On the other hand, African Americans also disliked white individuals. The poem, Caged Bird mentions “But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing” (Maya Angelou 1). The stanza illustrates that regardless of the barriers African Americans face they are still willing to strive to obtain success. Similarly, African American anger is described in the Inaugural poem “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, and if faced with courage, need not be lived again (Angelou 3). In the article An Interview with Maya Angelou, Angelou expresses her anger towards ignorant people.
