The Alchemist is the popular and inspiring novel written by a Brazilian author Paulo Coelho in 1988. The book is originally written in Portuguese. It’s a novel that affiliate with an environment of the spiritual truth of the Middle Age with the melody of the desert. The Alchemist follows the dream, symbols, signs, and adventure follows a tale of young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago who has a dream and has a strong backbone to follow it. By writing this marvelous piece, Coelho wants to convey that we always have to follow our destiny, not to avoid those because of the fear of non- fulfillment of our dreams. The story starts with a scene in a sacristy of disclaimed church near at sycamore tree where Santiago was dreaming about a child who says him about the hidden treasure located near the Pyramids in Egypt.
When he decided to go her father says to him "Travel the world until you see that our castle is the greatest and our women the most beautiful". During this journey, Santiago meets various people starting from the Melchizedek to the alchemist. Melchizedek says about good or bad omens and makes him realize, what the actual duty of a shepherd boy is and how to chase his dream. Santiago got the elixir of living from this old king of Salem. By this way, he experiences greatness of life. He remains strong when he become penny less and find a way out to get rid of the situation and in the desert, he finds his soul mate and fall in love with her .But when he propose her to marry her, she says she will marry him when he will accomplish his mission and find the treasure. He becomes perplexed by her reply. But the end of the story he realizes that actually treasure can get where your heart belongs and by this traveling whatever he discovered and wisdom he acquired that is the real gain of his
life.
The alchemist is a symbolic story; the wilderness of desert is a symbol that is used by many writers. Paul Coelho also follows their path and has symbolized the dream as Gods language. The beautiful novel is brimming with hope and optimism. It is a story of Santiago within him every person can find their own image as we all have a dream and somehow we also need someone to guide us to march ahead forward towards the right direction. The novel is a combination of powerful writing and encouraging philosophy which makes the novel bestseller and remarkable.
