The first reason is many people cannot work for a living because they have to raise their children. A young man’s comment in an interview states, “A family could sustain itself on one income. Now both parents have to work, and the kids end up raising themselves... and that leads kids to make poor decisions.” (Brownstein). Basically this young man is saying that if both parents work then it is hard on their kids. Before the American Dream ended one parent had to work and one could raise the kids but, now in the middle class families both parents have to work to raise the kid. In the middle class families today it is very hard to work and support their kids so many parents do not work. A parent’s comment in an interview …show more content…
states, “It’s a challenge just trying to stay afloat. It’s a competing world... they’re going to have to settle for less.” (Brownstein). Basically, she is a concern parent working hard and trying to support her family the best she can. She wants her family to have the best but in the middle class families today many people has to settle for less than for better.
Another reason is many people just want everything giving to them.
In the middle class families today it is very hard just to get everything handed to them. An older woman’s comment in an interview “They have no concept of reasonability: how to act... how to function out in the real world. Their parents have handed them too much on a platter” (Brownstein). She is basically saying that many parents gives their children whatever they want and when they want it. a older gentlemen commented in an interview "when I was growing up, you was corrected at a friend's house," he insisted. " now kids do what they want". (Brownstein) He is saying that back in the days kids could not do what they wanted to do at a friends house. if they was bad they got corrected but now when kids go to their friends house they do whatever they want whenever they want to do
it.
The last reason is because many people is giving up on what they wanted to do in life. A retired nurse commented in an interview "we're not giving them the tools to be able to deal with a lot of things coming down the pike." she says " There's no job security technology is taking a lot of jobs away. What place needs a telephone operator'? (Brownstein). She is saying that everyone's dream is being crushed down by all the technology taking over. A man commented in a interview "There are less opportunities unless you want to be flipping hamburgers". (Brownstein). He is saying that there are a lot more jobs out there to look forward to so basically don’t give up people dreams.
To sum it all up, the American Dream is the belief that hardworking citizens can make it without any worries. The American Dream is not possible today for middle class families because many people can not work all the time, many people want things handed to them, and many people is giving up on what they want in life. So NO the American Dream is NOT possible.
