The United States is a nation known for its riches, its power, and its opportunity, and just as with any nation, there is an ‘American identity’. Numerous impacting events and influential people, such as Andy Warhol, Sally Ride, and Helen Keller, have created this identity. The American identity is defined as a change of perspective, rallying for equality, and persevering to accomplish unimaginable results.
Although Andy Warhol is viewed today as a large icon of pop culture, he had a difficult start in life. He was born in August of 1928 as Andrew Warhola, and spent a large part of his childhood bedridden because of a neurological medical condition. He dabbled in all areas of art, and combined them instead of sticking to one medium. He performed and recorded songs in the music industry, painted, drew, sculpted, printed, and filmed. By the end of his life, Warhol would leave behind more than 3000 movies, documentaries, and video clips*. He was innovative in that he was one of the first who successfully took advantage of social media in a time when social media was not as integrated into everyday life. Sally played many sports, and was even a tennis instructor at once point in her life. She graduated from Stanford University with a PhD in science and physics. Sally was selected to be a mission specialist in the shuttle pilot section of NASA*. She went on many missions to outer space and completed many successful scientific expeditions.
