The extract under analysis comes from “The Apple Tree” by J. Galsworthy. John Galsworthy was an English novelist and a playwright of the beginning of the XXth century. He is most famous for “The Forsyte Saga” and its sequels “A Modern Comedy” and “End of the Chapter”, all of them were filmed several times. What’s more, the writer won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1932.
The extract deals with the description of the setting for of events in the story. This description can be a part of the development of events. The night has just come and the protagonist is waiting for another protagonist’s arrival. The setting is realistic and is presented in a detailed way.
The basic theme of the extract is nature and its closeness to the man. The basic idea is that nature could mirror inner feelings of a person; what’s more, a person can be happy at simply observing nature phenomena.
From the viewpoint of the presentation the text is the 3d person narrative: “He had the oddest feeling”; “He put his hands on..”, which sounds more objective.
The character we meet in the extract under analysis is Ashurst. The writer reveals the character by means of indirect characterization: “Ashurst moved a step or two, and again halted”, - it’s evident that the protagonist is waiting for somebody, the meeting was prearranged, though Ashurst doesn’t know for sure whether he or she comes. It could be his beloved one and their love is prohibited, or an old friend of him, whom he hasn’t seen for ages: “Would he come – would she?” Nature surrounds the character and reveals his inner thoughts and feelings, understands him as an old friend of him: “He had the oddest feeling of actual companionship”. It should be mentioned that the protagonist is happy simply observing the nature that surrounds him, apple trees and innumerable flowers on them, moths and singing birds.
