The Argument For Gun Control In America

Gun-control in America Gun control has been a very debated topic in America for as long as the county has been a country. Some believe that there is no reason to have personally owned guns because of the danger and violence associated with them. Others believe that guns are the backbone of American society and without them chaos would ensue and the country would no longer function. There are also many in the middle that believe that there should be regulations on the types of firearms and the number of them and individual may be allowed to own. Arguments have been made on both sides of the gun-control controversy. “A recent study published by the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy concluded that there is a negative correlation between
gun ownership and violent crime in countries internationally(Guns in America).” According to Gun Crimes, President Barack Obama stated that ”We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths. So the notion that gun laws don’t work, or just will make it harder for law-abiding citizens and criminals [to] still get their guns is not borne out by the evidence (Gun Crimes).” Whichever side of the gun control argument you fall on, here are some actual statistics and facts. Just Facts conducted a poll that showed “About 99.8% of firearms and more than 99.6% of handguns will not be used to commit violent crimes in any given year(Just Facts).” Just Facts also stated that “with weak gun violence prevention laws and higher rates of gun ownership have the highest overall gun death rates in the nation(Just Facts).” Additionally ““Right-to-carry” states allow individuals to carry firearms for protection against crime. In these states, the violent crime rate is 24% lower than the rest of the U.S., the murder rate is 28% lower, and the robbery rate is 50% lower(Just Facts).” However, “In homes with guns, the homicide of a household member is almost 3 times more likely to occur than in homes without guns.”
The interpretation of the second amendment has been the backbone to the arguments on both political sides of the gun control argument.The Second Amendment reads that ”A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed(Pro Con).” Additionally “America's pervasive gun culture stems in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment(Pro Con).” “Marco Rubio has commented that the 2nd Amendment is “a cornerstone of our democracy,” and GOP frontrunner Donald Trump called Obama’s plan “no good” and promised to “unsign” it if elected president(Financial
World).” President Elect Donald J Trump has shown that he will make it a point to protect the rights of law abiding citizens and revert the mistakes that President Barack Obama has made.
He also made it a point that he would “Fix our broken mental health system. All of the tragic mass murders that occurred in the past several years have something in common – there were red flags that were ignored. We can’t allow that to continue. We must expand treatment programs, and reform the laws to make it easier to take preventive action to save innocent lives. Most people with mental health problems are not violent, but just need help, and these reforms will help everyone.(DonaldJTrump)” In addition, he exclaimed that he would “Expand and bring back programs like Project Exile and get gang members and drug dealers off the street. When we do, crime will go down and our cities and communities will be safer places to
live(DonaldJTrump).” In contrast, “Under the Obama-Hillary Administration, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) admitted to targeting hundreds of conservative organizations. Using the federal government to target and silence political opponents (DonaldJTrump).” Also, “Hillary Clinton will overturn the Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the Second Amendment as a private right, so that any city or state in this country can ban private gun ownership(DonaldJTrump).” In a press conference, President Barack Obama was asked “why [he] supports gun control measures that haven’t curtailed gun violence in places like Chicago. He never got an answer. Instead, [he] rambled on about how we require people to get a driver’s license before they can drive a car, and how regulating auto manufacturers—requiring seat belts, air bags, etc.—have reduced auto fatalities. The president mused, “Why don’t we treat this like every other thing that we use(The Federalist)?” “Because, Mr. President, every other thing we use isn’t protected by an amendment to the U.S. Constitution(The Federalist).” “The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed -- where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once(Gun Goddess).” “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man(Gun Goddess).” In conclusion, The facts that so many people refuse to accept have, on many occasions, outweighed the arguments made by anti gun activists. The millions of law abiding citizens that own and carry guns on a daily basis aren’t the ones that are put on the news. Only the number of shootings, gang attacks, and petty robberies are what are publicizes by the left sided media in America. However there will not be a right wing news media group because they are the ones that have the jobs that are the backbone to the United States people. A quote from the First of many American Presidents puts everything into words “Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence.... From the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable.... The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place of honor with all that's good... A free people ought to be armed(Gun Goddess).”
