Tan would show different stories or flashbacks throughout the book for example the man met another man while he was working on the production line.
This man went to war and lost his leg when he went back to his town that he came from he found that it was destroyed. When Tan was doing this i believe he was showing that this city was built out of people that came from other places and came to have a better life. After living in this new place for a short period of time he sent his family a letter hoping that they would come join him in this magical place. After waiting his family finally came and joined him. After his family got there a younger women showed up and that is where Tan left the book. There were many differences and similarities in this picture book compared to a normal book. Overall because i have never read a picture book i didn't really like it. My reason for thinking this is because when you read a picture book the big ideas are given and you have to come up with the small ideas, opposed to a write book with words where you are given details only and you make up the big
picture.
Part 2:
Even though there were many themes in this book they were very unclear because it is a picture book. One theme that was reoccurring throughout the book was the theme of family. This theme was on the first page, the last page and almost every page in between. It started out with one family in the beginning that was going through some tough time but at least they had each other. The father was forced to go make some money somewhere else and find a better place for them to live in. once he was there he felt very lost without his family but he found another family that had the same connections that his family had they invited him to stay for a meal and they bonded. After seen that there were other families living in this magical place the man felt determined to get his family to the place but he had to get a job first. Once the man had a job his family came to live with him once again. Establishing that family is the most important thing to him. The main symbol in the book i believe is the darkness. I believe this because in the beginning the book is very dark and depressing as the book goes on the book gets lighter. I can tell this because as the book went on everyone started to smile instead of look very depressed, also the pages itself got lighter. Overall it was a very strange book. Because it was a picture book you could see a different story then someone else and i thought that was what made the book so special.
