The 20th century had two broad eras: whereas the first half of the 20th century was characterized by confrontation, the second half was characterized by cooperation. Economic prosperity in an effort to rebuilt the damages after world war two was made possible by the trio of United Nations (UN) organizations, IMF, World Bank and GATT, that fostered global monetary and economic cooperation. The post-war period thus demonstrated the benefits of adhering to economic wisdom and political pragmatism that was driven by the new UN insti- tutions. The rich countries, it appears, enjoyed the fruits of globalization but are only now becoming aware of the high price of global integration, as the Western world has built an as- tounding gap in economic terms between itself and the developing world that keeps causing tension and
