'The Astronomer' By Kay Boyle
Kay Boyle has the astronomer appear very briefly; yet informs the reader on his life and how he messes up just by not being there.Having the astronomer appear briefly was very significant because it showed the reader how Ms. Ames, his wife, is not as happy at all with their marriage. This one act is very important because it is essentially what drives the plot of the story. Ultimately emphasizes that life or marriage is not a one way street and you have to look at both parties involved to get a fuller picture.
The astronomer appears once but this one presence caused a domino affect affecting actions of other characters in the story. For instance, his one presence caused his wife to ignore him and go off with a plumber. We rarely see the Astronomer

If the Astronomer was around more then Ms. Ames would not be having an epiphany about how she missed out on life and how she might be with the wrong guy. In the text Mrs. Ames realizes the extent of her dysfunctional marriage as well as her unhappiness in life due to her husband’s lack of attention during the daytime. This all contributed to the change seen in Mrs. Ames character, bringing back her sense of rebellion and excitement all while forgetting about her husband. All of this ultimately helped create the theme of epiphanies and help show how one characters action affected more than just other actions of different characters in a …show more content…
For instance, when the narrator stated "Surely it seemed to him strange for a man to linger in bed, with the sun pouring yellow as wine all over the place” it made the reader realize how the plumber is developing in the story. The astronomer’s brief appearance left the plumber struggling to understand the actions of the astronomer and how he only is there for a short time period with his wife. This ultimately makes the astronomers presence even stronger and even felt by the plumber. Also it helped the astronomer's wife realize what she really wants in life. His brief appearance all the time in her life makes her see she is not satisfied with the way things are going. Then later on in the story his brief appearance caused Mrs. Ames to develop into a wild person who made her own decisions. The reader can see this when Mrs. Ames states "When Mr. Ames gets up, please tell him I've gone down.”. This action of Mrs. Ames shows the reader her full development of a character by turning from someone who always does the same thing to someone who does something

When looking at leadership from a trait approach, several solid characteristics exist. One of those characteristics is personality. Personality is important especially in the work place and can set the tone of the environment. For example, if a manager/leader has a positive attitude and approach to employees during a situation then the outcome will be positive. When employees are happy and working in positive atmosphere achievements and goals are accomplished. An additional strength of the trait approach is that the approach provides a deep understanding of what makes an individual successful as a leader. This will help future theorists because he or she will have a list of traits that predict leadership.…

“...from the remains of the Unmentionable Times, a box of glass, devised to go forth the power of the sky of greater strength than we had ever achieved before. And when we put our wires into this box, when we close the current – the wire glowed! It came to life, it turned red, and a circle of light lay on the stone before us.“(Rand 63-64). In the opening of this story, the narrator is closed-minded to the idea of a blind man entering his home. “A blind man in my house is not something I looked forward to” (1). It is through his resistance that we are introduced to his insecurities, and the layer of doubt that overcomes him. He is a simple man who lives a simple life. He loves his wife, but is not even sure what the love he has with her entails. His wife is a very expressive woman, using poetry to describe feeling and emotion. He is dismissive of her talent and more obviously, of her. “I can remember I didn’t think much of the poem. Of course, I didn’t tell her that... something to read” (1). They’re lack of communication is what draws the woman even closer to the blind man. She shares an intimate and emotional bond with him that she has never been able to establish with the narrator.…

In conclusion, the narrator finally realizes the worth of seeing people and things from different points of view. This is important in the story because it helped the readers see how fast the narrator changes during the story. It also teaches you not to judge a book by its cover. It is also an example to show how everyone has their own point of view on things, blind or not. The narrator needed to look outside the box because not everything is about him. He was selfish in the begin but that changed as well. The narrator went from a negative individual to a positive…

In the Great Gatsby, social standings are always on the minds of the East and West Eggers. Either thinking about their wealth, appearances, or where they really stand in the social ladder, they are constantly thinking about themselves; and while some despise each other for what they are, others only dream about being them-people like Myrtle Wilson. Through Fitzgeralds choice of diction and detail, he conveys Myrtle as a low class dreamer, only desiring the acceptance from the upscale socialite friends of her boyfriend Tom; and Tom as a self-absorbed, wealthy, and power craving aristocrat.…
