The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place between April 9th, 1917 and April 12th, 1917. The Battle of Vimy Ridge is one of the greatest victories and battles in Canada’s history.
The Canadians won the Battle of Vimy Ridge because of these reasons.
The first reason why the Canadians won the Battle of Vimy Ridge is because they had massive training and preparation. The Canadians spent months of intense preparations. A full-scale replica was laid out for them and the Canadians carried out repeated exercises, rehearsing what they would perform throughout the attack. Also the Canadians had experience from the battle of the Somme and Ypres, which they suffered many casualties, so they knew what was to come at
Vimy Ridge. The smallest Canadian units got handed maps to act as guides and the Canadians were fully informed of their routes and objectives against the Germans.
The second reason why the Canadians won is because they used military mining. The Canadians used military mining, to go under cover at night and travel underneath no-mans land without being seen by the Germans. At night the Canadians travelled underground through the tunnels with mines, which they used to blow apart the ridge. The Tunnels allowed the Canadians to travel to and from the front lines carrying the wounded men and supplies to safety. The Canadians were also protected from shells and bombs that the Germans dropped down on them.
The last reason the Canadians won is because of the impact of the air and weather. The Germans couldn’t use gas of any kind because the wind was against them. The Canadians gained valuable intelligence from aerial surveillance on the Germans positions and artillery sights and the Canadians fighter aircrafts prevented the Germans from gaining a clear idea of the Canadians plans. The Germans Blimps were shot down from aerial surveillance but were tough to shoot down because fighters and anti-aircraft guns guarded them.
I conclude that the three main reasons why the Canadians won the Battle of Vimy Ridge is because of the massive training and preparation the Canadians had to get ready for the battle, military mining which helped them blow apart the ridge and, carry supplies and the wounded, to and from the front lines without getting shelled and hurt. And the weather, which helped the Canadians not lose important information about there plans and positions and helped them shoot down the Germans Blimps. Therefore this is why/how the Canadians won the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
