As previously stated, Taylor meets Turtle; however, Turtle is not the only person who has a large impact on Taylor’s new life. After leaving Oklahoma, Taylor travels to her final destination, Tucson, Arizona. In Arizona Taylor meets many more people, but the two people who impacted her the most were Esperanza and Estevan, two immigrants from Guatemala. The two become part of her support system very quickly. They even risked their lives to help Taylor at the end of The Bean Trees. Neffie also meets a few people in New York that changed who she was as a person. Beryl and her two daughters became a large part of Neffies life. Beryl’s daughters made Neffie happy and feel accepted; however, Beryl did not bring the same positivity (McDaniel). The way Beryl impacts Neffie could be viewed as either positive or negative. In one way, Beryl caused Neffie to question who she is as a person, due to the way she spoke. On the other hand, it was the negativity that lead to Neffie’s positive change of attitude. After moving to new places and meeting new people, Neffie and Taylor changed their views. Neffie had an internal transformation. At first she believed that how she spoke was wrong and felt as though she needed to be the same as everyone else. After experiencing what she did, she realized that she was perfect how she was and not everyone needs to, or should be, the same. Taylor’s transformation
