He was born in Iowa in 1914. He went to get his degree in forestry. He then went to work for the United States Forestry Service but he later returned to Minnesota for more schooling. He studied plant pathology and got a master’s and doctorate degree. Until 1944 Borlaug was working as a microbiologist for du Pont de Nemours Foundation and was lead in the research of industrial agriculture bactericides, fungicides, and preservations. In 1944, he took the job as lead researcher and developer in a production program in Mexico. The research was for genetics, plant breeding, soil science, and plant pathology.
